Pirates beat Potlatch 56-8 at Homecoming
The Prairie football team thoroughly dominated the Potlatch Loggers as they cruised past the visitors 56-6 to win their home opener, which was also Homecoming, Friday, Sept. 25 at Cottonwood. Dean Johnson grabs the runners shirt while T.J. Hibbard grabs a lef and another Prairie defender helps stop this play for a loss.
The game was played in the rain which alternated from a light misting to fairly heavy throughout the game. It pretty much stopped only during halftime.
Prairie received the opening kickoff which Brody Hasselstrom returned 14 yards to the Prairie 40.
A 35 yard run to the left by Hasselstrom moved the ball to the Potlatch 25. After a holding penalty set them back to the 35, Hasselstrom picked up another 32 yards on a run to the right side. On first and goal at the 3 he took the ball up the middle for the touchdown. Cole Schlader ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0 just over a minute into the game.
Potlatch’s first possession netted them just 2 yards and they had to punt. Prairie took over at the Potlatch 45 after an 11 yard return by Hasselstrom.
After Prairie picked up a first down at the 33, Hasselstrom had a big gained called back on another holding penalty. The next play started like another sweep to the right by Hasselstrom but Schlader wound up running a bootleg back to the left where there were no defenders as he went 40 yards for a touchdown. Hasselstrom added the 2-pointer to make it 16-0.
The defense scored Prairie’s next touchdown. Potlatch faced a third and 12 at their own 15. Tyson Tucker’s pass was intercepted by Schlader at the 21 and returned for a touchdown. Schlader ran in the 2-pointer to make it 24-0 with 5:33 still left in the first quarter.
Potlatch’s next possession resulted in another punt. The punt went straight up and only went 8 yards downfield with Prairie taking over at the Potlatch 43.
Schlader passed over the middle to T.J. Hibbard for 22 yards. He then connected with Colton McElroy for 16 yards to set up first and goal at the 5. Schlader ran a keeper around left end for the touchdown on the next play. The 2-point try failed as Prairie led 30-0 with 2:24 left in the first quarter.
Potlatch punted again on the last play of the first quarter with Prairie taking over at the 40 after a 14 yard return by Hasselstrom.
Schlader connected with Wyatt Ross for 30 yards on first down. After a 2 yard gain by Hibbard, Prairie was called for a false start. Schlader connected with John Gehring for 8 yards to set up third and 5 at the 25. A shovel pass to Hasselstrom (basically a forward pitch for those who don’t know what a shovel pass is) gained 23 yards to set up first and goal at the 2. Schlader took the ball in on the next play. The 2-point pass fell incomplete as Prairie led 36-0.
Prairie got the ball back from Potlatch after 3 plays on a fumble that was recovered by Gehring at the Potlatch 31. Hasselstrom scored on the next play. Schlader then passed to Hasselstrom for the 2-pointer to make it 44-0 with 7:55 left in the half.
Potlatch fumbled twice on their next possession. They first one led to an 11 yard loss and the second one was recovered by Dean Johnson at the Potlatch 20.
Prairie almost fumbled the ball right back but Schlader recovered. 2 plays later Schlader passed to a wide open Hasselstrom in the end zone for another touchdown. The 2-point try again failed as Prairie took a  50-0 lead with 4:47 left in the half.
Potlatch gained their only first down of the half on their next possession but then were forced to punt again. Hasselstrom came close to breaking the punt return for another touchdown as he returned it 47 yards to the Potlatch 20 as time ran out in the half.
The entire second half would be played with a running clock with Potlatch asking that it continue to run even after scoring plays.
Potlatch received the second half kickoff with Shane Hanson’s kick going into the end zone for a touchback. Potlatch wound up punting again and this time Johnson got a hand on the kick making it go straight up in the air with Prairie taking over at the Potlatch 14.
It didn’t take Prairie long to add another score as Schlader passed to Dalton Ross on the next play for a touchdown. The 2-point try failed making it 56-0 with 7:33 left in the half.
Prairie started subbing in their JV players and Potlatch was able to pick up a first down. On the next play the Loggers had what would have been another first down but Chase Kaschmitter ripped the ball away from the Potlatch runner giving Prairie the ball at their own 29.
Prairie fumbled the ball right back though on the next play. Potlatch was able to score their only touchdown as a result, covering 29 yards in 3 plays.
Prairie gave Potlatch another chance to score as the Loggers intercepted McElroy’s pass at the Prairie 37. The Loggers moved the ball down to the 1 but then fumbled the snap with Travis Alfrey recovering at the 1.
With the clock running down, Prairie declined to punt on fourth and 9  from the 2 with Lane Schumacher gaining 7 yards out to the 9.
Potlatch had time for just 1 play and Kaschmitter and Raven Cronan combined to stop the runner for no gain as time ran out.
Prairie picked up 175 yards rushing in the game on 20 attempts. Hasselstrom carried just 4 times but gained 101 yards. Schlader added 54 yards on 6 carries.

Potlatch gained just 100 yards total, all rushing the ball and most of that in the second half. They had their 100 yards on 37 attempts led by Avery Palmer who had 56 yards on 7 carries.
Tucker was 0 for 3 passing with 1 interception.
Johnson led the defense with 5.5 tackles plus a fumble recovery. Kaschmitter had 5 tackles with a fumble recovery. Hibbard had 4 tackles. Gehring had 3 tackles.
