Pirates crush Kubs 72-6
A hyped up battle of unbeaten White Pine League teams quickly turned into a rout as the Prairie Pirates blew past Kamiah 72-6 at Cottonwood Friday, Oct. 2. John  Gehring pulled the ball away from 2 Kamiah defenders for a big catch that set up Prairie’s first touchdown.
Prairie received the opening kickoff, taking over at their own 34 after a 19 yard return by Brody Hasselstrom.
Two runs by Hasselstrom netted 11 yards and a first down.
After a 4 yard run by T.J. Hibbard, John Gehring somehow came away with a catch despite double coverage and picked up 34 yards to the Kamiah 17.
Cole Schlader scored the game’s first points on the next play as he ran a keeper around the right side for the touchdown. The 2-point run was stopped short with Prairie leading 6-0.
Kamiah netted -2 yards on their first possession and had to punt with the ball going out of bounds at the Prairie 40.
A 13 yard run by Hasselstrom on second and 7 moved the ball into Kamiah territory at the 44. Hibbard gained 5 yards up the middle and then Hasselstrom took off around the left side and went 39 yards for his first touchdown of the night. The 2-point try again failed as Prairie took a 12-0 lead.
A holding penalty plus a 9 yard loss on a pass completion with Gehring making the tackle led to another Kamiah punt. Prairie was called for roughing the punter giving Kamiah another set of downs.
2 incomplete passes and a 2 yard loss on a run led to Kamiah punting again with Prairie taking over at their own 35.
Two Hasselstrom runs netted 11 yards and a first down. After Schlader was dropped for a loss he completed a screen pass to the left to Gehring that gained 12 yards and set up third and 1. Schlader picked up 3 yards on a sneak for the first down.
A false start set the Pirates back but two plays later Schlader passed to a wide open Dalton Ross along the right sideline for an 18 yard gain to the Kamiah 27. Hasselstrom started up the middle then cut to the right and went 27 yards for his second touchdown on the next play. Schlader ran in the 2-pointer to make it 20-0 with 1:36 left in the first quarter.
Kamiah finally put a drive together on their next possession picking up a pair of first downs as the moved the ball down to the Prairie 37. Facing fourth and 14, Kamiah quarterback Gabe Eades tried to pass for the first down but Schlader picked off the pass and returned it 5 yards to the Prairie 32.
On Prairie’s first play a bad snap led to Schlader chasing after the ball. He went into scramble mode then spotted an open Hibbard downfield. Hibbard caught the pass and then proceeded to take the ball all the way to the end zone for a 68 yard play. Talk about turning a potential disaster into a huge play! Schlader then pass to Gehring for the 2-pointer to make it 28-0.
Shane Hanson’s kickoff rolled into the end zone for a touchback and Eades fumbled on Kamiah’s first play from the 20. Matt Coppernoll recovered at the 20.
Hibbard picked up 18 yards on a burst up the middle and Schlader finished off the drive with a run around the right side for a touchdown. Schlader passed to Hibbard for the 2-pointer to make it 36-0.

Kamiah turned the ball over again on their next possession as Schlader made his second interception of the game at the Kamiah 40 and returned it to the 28.
Prairie almost gave it right back as Schlader and Hasselstrom misfired on the handoff but Hasselstrom recovered the fumble and got back to the line of scrimmage. Hasselstrom picked up 9 yards on the next play and Hibbard converted the first down with a 5 yard gain up the middle.
Hibbard gained 10 yards on the next play to set up first and goal at the 4. Hasselstrom scored on the next play. The 2-point pass fell incomplete as Prairie took a 42-0 lead.
On their fourth straight possession Kamiah turned the ball over. This time it was another fumble with Dalton Ross recovering at the Kamiah 41.
A false start set the Pirates back 5 yards but a 10 yard screen pass to Hibbard and a 9 yard run by Hasselstrom moved the ball to the 27. On third and 3 at the 20 Hasselstrom scored his fourth touchdown of the game. Schlader scored the 2-pointer but only after picking up his own fumble. That made it 50-0 with 4:19 still left in the half.
Kamiah didn’t turn the ball over on their next possession but still had to punt the ball away. Hasselstrom received the punt and headed left then handed off to Dalton Ross coming back to the right. The return though wound up coming back on a penalty that set Prairie up at their own 15.
After a 5 yard run by Jesse Cronan, Prairie started ripping off huge chunks of yardage on running plays. Hasselstrom gained 22 yards on a draw play. Schlader picked up 38 yards on a keeper to the left. Hasselstrom then finished off the drive as he went untouched the final 20 yards to the end zone. Schlader pass to Dalton Ross for the 2-pointer to make it 58-0 with 40 seconds left in the half.

Kamiah received the second half kickoff and gained just 5 yards before punting again.
Prairie took over at their own 35 and needed just 5 plays to cover 65 yards. Schlader converted a third and 6 with a 19 yard run. Ravin Cronan picked up 6 yards then Hasselstrom took a pitch around right end and went 36 yards for his sixth touchdown of the night. Schlader passed to Lane Schumacher for the 2-pointer to make it 66-0.
Kamiah was able to pick up a first down but then had to punt again. Prairie took over at their own 13 and sent the JV offense out on the field.
Trenton Lorentz converted a couple of big plays including a 20 yard run and a 29 yard pass reception that moved the ball to the Kamiah 35.
Ravin Cronan picked up 21 yards to set up a first down at the 13. On third and 8 backup quarterback Colton McElroy ran a keeper around right end for 11 yards and a touchdown. The 2-point try failed but Prairie now led 72-0 with 7:33 left in the game.
Kamiah then put together their only scoring drive of the game  as they took over at the Prairie 49 after a 26 yard kickoff return. A pair of first downs moved the ball to the 25. On second and 5 from the 20, Colton Sams scored Kamiah’s only touchdown of the night.
Chase Kaschmitter recovered Kamiah’s onside kick attempt at the Kamiah 49. Another big run by Lorentz gained 36 yards and Prairie then ran out the clock.
Hasselstrom had a huge game as he gained 228 yards on 18 carries and scored 6 touchdowns. Schlader picked up 76 yards on 6 carries with Lorentz gaining 56 yards on just 2 carries and Hibbard 42 yards on 6 carries. Ravin Cronan added 30 yards on 3 carries. Prairie piled up 455 yards rushing on 43 attempts. They were over 10 yards per carry as a team.
Schlader was 6 for 8 for 139 yards while McElroy was 1 for 2 for 29 yards. Hibbard caught 2 passes for 78 yards. Gehring caught 2 for 46 yards. Ross caught 2 for 15 yards and Lorentz caught 1 for 29 yards.
Kamiah gained 92 yards rushing on 37 attempts and their passers completed 2 of 10 passes with 2 interceptions for -9 yards. Sams had 62 yards rushing on 16 carries to lead the Kubs.
John Gehring led the defense with 5 tackles including 1 for a 9 yard loss on a pass play. Noah Behler had 4 tackles. Schlader had 3.5 tackles and 2 interceptions. Ravin Cronan had 3.5 tackles. Hasselstrom had 3 tackles including 1 for loss. Hibbard and Jesse Cronan had 3 tackles each. Dean Johnson had 2.5 tackles including 1 for a loss. Matt Coppernoll and Dalton Ross each had 2 tackles plus a fumble recovery. Kaschmitter had 1 tackle. Hanson, Schumacher and Ben Elven each had 0.5 tackles.
Prairie is now 4-0 on the season and 3-0 in league play. This week they travel to Lapwai for a 7 p.m. start on Friday, Oct. 9.
