Vs. Genesee
The home game against Genesee on Friday, Dec. 11, is the first team we’ve ever started a game in one gym and ended it in another.
Power went out at the high school just before halftime of the varsity game. After some time spent in the gym waiting for the lights to come back on it was decided to see if the Elementary School gym had power. It did, and everyone packed up and Lane Schumacher is about to shoot the game-winning 3-pointer against Genesee. And yes this is at the Elementary School gym due to a power outage at the high schoolmoved to the other gym. With crowds limited to just a handful of people due to Covid-19, it was a lot less of a problem than it could have been.
As far as we can tell the last time a Prairie boys varsity team played in what’s now the Elementary gym was 1982. The last time the girls varsity played there was the 2003-04 season. The girls called that gym home from their inception in the 1975-76 season until 2004.
The game itself was close all the way. Genesee’s Dawson Durham led the Bulldogs attack and was nearly unstoppable, winding up with 38 points in the game.
Schlader got Prairie started with a basket that tied the game at 2-2. Durham scored for Genesee but Wemhoff answered to tie it at 4-4. Genesee’s Carson Schwartz hit a 3 but a basket each by Wemhoff and Schumacher gave Prairie their first lead at 8-7.
Genesee hit a 3 but Schlader answered with a 3 of his own to make it 11-10.
Genesee tied it on a free throw but Schumacher put Prairie back on top with a lay-up. Durham scored late to tie the game at 13-13, which is where the quarter ended.
Genesee took back the lead with 2 free throws to open the second quarter then Durham scored Genesee’s next 12 points as the Bulldogs took a 27-17 lead.
All Prairie could score the rest of the half was free throws but fortunately they went 8 for 8 at the line to get back within 5. Schlader made a pair. Rambo made both ends of a 1 and 1. Hasselstrom made a pair and the Schlader made 2 with 40.1 seconds left. Just after Schlader’s second free throw swished, the lights went out.
Once the game was picked back up at the Elementary School gym, neither team scored and the halftime score was 25-30 in favor of Genesee.
There was no halftime break as they had already had a substantial break. Rambo scored to cut the lead to 3 but Durham answered with a basket.
Schumacher then hit his first 3 of the season to cut the lead to 2. The two teams traded baskets until Schlader got whistled for a technical, his third personal foul. Durham made both free throws to put Genesee up by 6.
Schlader answered by converting a 3-point play after scoring on a drive to the hoop.
Genesee’s only third quarter points not scored by Durham followed but Schwartz answered for Prairie with a drive to the hoop and Hasselstrom added a free throw to cut the lead to 2 at 40-42. Durham scored on a drive to end the third quarter with Genesee up by 4.
Wemhoff scooped in a lay-up to start the fourth quarter but Genesee answered. A 3 by Schumacher and a putback by Rambo gave Prairie their first lead of the second half at 47-46 with 5:55 to play.
Genesee scored but Wemhoff answered with a nice move to the hoop to put Prairie back on top 49-48.
Durham sank a 3-pointer to put Genesee back on top but Schlader hit 2 free throws to tie it at 51.
Another 3 by Durham and a driving lay-up, also by Durham, put Genesee up 51-56 with 2:45 left to play.
With just over 2 minutes left Wemhoff stole the ball and was fouled as he made the basket, adding the free throw to cut the deficit to 54-56.
With 15.7 seconds left Genesee’s Cy Wareham missed the front end of a 1 and 1 and Prairie rebounded and called timeout. Coach Shawn Wolter set up a play to give Schumacher an open 3 on the wing. With 5.7 seconds left Schumacher hit that 3-pointer to put Prairie up by 2.
Prairie then clinched the game when Durham was forced into a double dribble with 1.2 seconds left.
Schlader wound up leading Prairie in scoring with 16 points. Wemhoff scored 15 and Schumacher 13. Rambo scored 6, Hasselstrom 3 and Schwartz 2.
Despite a height disadvantage at every position, Prairie was outrebounded by just 41-44. Schlader had 13 rebounds to lead the Pirates.
Hasselstrom had 3 steals and Rambo, Schlader and Schwartz each had 2 assists.
Durham had a huge game for Genesee with 38 points and 15 rebounds.
The Pirates hit 19 of 63 shots, 30%, but made up for it at the line where they were 13 for 17, 76%. Genesee was 22 for 59 from the field, 37%, and 6 for 12 at the line, 50%.
Durham was 16 for 27 from the field for Genesee while the rest of the team was just 6 for 32.
Prairie is now 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in league play.
Prairie won a low scoring JV game 31-17.
Genesee took an early lead on a 3-pointer at 5-7. A free throw each by Forsmann and Hanson tied it at 7 but Genesee scored to end the first quarter with a 7-9 lead.
Genesee led 9-13 in the second quarter with 2:58 left then didn’t score again the rest of the half.
Prairie closed the half with a 7-0 run to take a 16-13 lead. Forsmann started things with a putback. Ben Elven added a basket on a feed from Forsmann. Colton McElroy stole the ball and scored to put Prairie ahead 14-13 with 9 seconds left. Forsmann scored a putback with 5 seconds left after a Genesee turnover.
Another steal by McElroy led to a putback by Hanson to start the second half scoring.
After a basket by Genesee, Prairie took a 9-point lead with a basket each by Hanson on a putback, Alfrey after a steal and Forsmann after steal that made it 24-15.
Genesee scored but a free throw by Hanson made it 25-17 after 3 quarters.
Genesee was held scoreless in the fourth quarter, going 0 for 9 from the field and 0-2 at the line.
Prairie meanwhile got a basket each from McElroy, Forsmann and Elven to win by 14.
