Pirates win twice
The Prairie boys basketball team picked up a pair of wins in the past week. On Tuesday, Dec. 15, they traveled to Orofino where they won 60-46. On Thursday, Dec. 17, they picked up a league win at Kooskia where they defeated Clearwater Valley 64-31.
They were to play Potlatch at Cottonwood on Saturday but that game got postponed due to Covid issues with Potlatch. The game that was scheduled at Potlatch on January 30 will now be here at Cottonwood. They will play at Potlatch on Feb. 18, but only if that game has impact on District seedings.
At Orofino
Orofino scored first, hitting 2 of 4 free throws, but Prairie tied it on a basket by Lane Schumacher and took the lead on a basket by Wyatt Ross with 5:34 left in the first quarter. Brody Hasselstrom made it 6-2.

Prairie closed out the opening quarter with a basket by Cole Schlader and a 3 by Lane Schumacher that made it 13-6.
Schumacher opened the scored quarter with another 3-pointer. Orofino answered with a basket then Prairie went on a 16-2 run to take a 32-10 lead. In that run Schlader scored 7 points and Zach Rambo 6.
Orofino scored in the final minute of the half to make it 32-12 at the break.
In the third quarter Orofino came out and was able to cut the lead down to 11 at 42-31. In that 10-19 run by the Maniacs, Schlader scored 7 of Prairie’s 10 points to help hold off the Maniacs.
A 3 by Hasselstrom, a putback by Rambo and a driving lay-up at the buzzer pushed Prairie’s lead back to 17 after 3 quarters, 49-32.
Tyler Wemhoff opened the fourth quarter scoring to give Prairie a 19 point lead at 51-32 but Orofino answered with a 2-13 run to cut the deficit to single digits at 53-35 with 1:39 to play. Ross had Prairie’s only points in that run.
A drive to the hoop by Schlader pushed the lead back to double digits and Schumacher followed with his third 3 of the game. A free throw with 22 seconds left was Orofino’s last gasp with Schumacher finishing the scoring with a pair of free throws.
Schlader wound up with 20 points to lead the scoring with Schumacher adding 15. Rambo scored 8 with Hasselstrom adding 7. Wemhoff and Ross scored 4 each with Kyle Schwartz and Shane Hanson adding 1 point each.
Prairie had a 38-33 edge on the boards led by Schlader who had a double-double with 15 rebounds. Wemhoff added 7.
Schlader had 3 steals while Wemhoff had 5 assists. Rambo added 3 assists.
Prairie was 24 for 58 from the field. 41%, and 6 for 10 at the line, 60%. Orofino was 19 for 57 from the field, 33%, and 5 for 12 at the line, 42%.
In the JV game Prairie led by as many as 14 points but had to win the game in overtime, 53-47.
Prairie jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the game as Lee Forsmann and Shane Hanson each scored a basekt and Noah Behler and Travis Alfrey each added a free throw.
Orofino got back within 3 at 8-5 but Alfrey sank a 3 to push the lead back to 6. After another 3 by Orofino, Prairie closed the first quarter with a free throw by Morgan Poxleitner, a basket by Levi Walsh and a free throw by Alfrey for a 15-8 lead.
A putback by Forsmann made it 17-8 early in the second quarter but Orofino again pulled within 3 at 18-15. Prairie led 25-21 at the half. Alfrey and Forsmann each had 5 points in the quarter for Prairie.
Prairie opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run to take a 33-21 lead. Alfrey had a basket and 2 free throws while Forsmann and Walsh each added a basket.
After a basket by Orofino, Hanson and Colton McElroy each scored for a 37-23 lead with 3:10 left in the third quarter.
Prairie led 39-27 after 3 quarters.
Orofino opened the fourth quarter with a 2-9 run to pull within 5 points at 41-36. They got it down to 3 with 1:21 to play but Prairie answered with 2 free throws by McElroy with 17 seconds left for a 45-40 lead.
Done deal, you say? Not so fast. Orofino hit a 3 with 10 seconds left then stole the ball and scored with 3 seconds left to tie the game at 45-45 and send it into overtime.
Prairie regrouped and dominated the overtime outscoring Orofino 8-2. Forsmann sank a free throw to put Prairie ahead and Alfrey followed with 2 free throws for a 48-45 lead. Orofino scored to cut the lead to 1 but Prairie scored the game’s final 5 points. Hanson scored a lay-up. Forsmann drove for a score after a steal by Behler. Behler then scored the game’s final point at the line.
Alfrey scored 16 to lead the JV’s with Forsmann scoring 12 and Hanson 10. Walsh added 6 points with McElroy scoring 4. Behler and Ben Elven added 2 each and Poxleitner scored 1.
Prairie dominated the boards 52-29. Forsmann led the Pirates with 15 rebounds with Alfrey adding 10.
Walsh had 3 steals while Alfrey, Forsmann and McElroy had 2 each. Walsh and McElroy each had 2 assists.
Prairie was 19 for 50 from the field, 38%, and 14 for 30 at the line, 47%. Orofino was 21 for 62 from the field, 34%, and 2 for 7 at the line, 28%.

Schwartz opened the scored with a free throw and Schlader followed with a 3-pointer for a 4-0 lead. C.V. answered with a baskets but Prairie then went on an 11-0 run to take control of the game.
Schlader hit another 3 then Rambo hit a pair of baskets and Wemhoff added 2 more baskets.
After C.V. broke the run with a score, Schlader added a 2-point basket for a 17-4 lead. C.V. made it 17-6 at the end of the quarter.
C.V. scored first in the second quarter then the Pirates went on a 9-0 run to push the lead to 26-8.
Schlader started the run with a lay-up and then a 3. Hasselstrom then scored 2 free throws and added a driving lay-up.
C.V. then scored a pair of baskets but Prairie answered with a basket each by Rambo and Schumacher for a 30-12 halftime lead.
Schumacher opened the second half scoring with a 3-pointer then after a 3-point play by C.V. Prairie had a 6-0 run as Schumacher scored then Rambo had a pair of baskets.
After a C.V. basket Rambo scored a basket and sank 2 free throws for a 43-17 lead.
Prairie took a 52-23 lead into the fourth quarter.
Rambo opened the fourth quarter with a drive to the hoop that invoked the running clock mercy rule. A basket each by Hasselstrom and Wemhoff made it 58-23.
C.V. scored 4 baskets the rest of the way but Prairie answered with a 3 each by Hasselstrom and Rambo as the Pirates won by 33.
Rambo had 19 points to lead Prairie in scoring with Schlader adding 17. Prairie had 4 score in double figures as Hasselstrom added 11 and Schumacher 10. Wemhoff scored 6 and Schwartz scored 1.
Prairie had a 29-27 edge on the boards led by Wemhoff with 7 rebounds.
Rambo had 4 steals and 4 assists while Schlader had 4 steals and 3 assists. Schwartz also had 3 assists.
Prairie was 26 for 56 from the field, 46%, and 5 for 6 at the line, 83%. C.V. was 15 for 39 from the field, 38%, and 1 for 5 at the line, 20%.
Prairie finishes the 2020 portion of their season with a 5-1 overall record, 2-1 in league play.
There was no JV game.
