Pirates win at Kamiah
An outstanding pitching outing from Chase Kaschmitter helped the Prairie baseball team pull out an 8-2 win at Kamiah Friday, March 26. Chase Kaschmitter mowed down Kamiah hitters last Friday allowing just 3 hits and 2 runs in an 8-2 Prairie win.
The game was originally scheduled for Thursday but moved to Friday due to weather.
Kaschmitter had a perfect game through 4 innings and took a no-hitter into the fifth and a shutout into the seventh before tiring and giving way to Connor Schwartz for the final 2 outs.
Prairie meanwhile manufactured a run in the first. Reece Shears reached on a passed ball third strike, stole second, was sacrificed to third by Dalton Ross and scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 Prairie lead.
Kaschmitter meanwhile struck out the first 8 batters he faced and faced and had 10 strikeouts through the first 4 innings.
Prairie was unable to score in the second inning but added 2 runs in the third. Brody Hasselstrom was hit by a pitch after there was 1 out. He went to second on a wild pitch and scored when Shears singled to left for the first hit of the game.
Shears went to second on a wild pitch and then Ross beat out an infield single attempting to bunt Shears over to third. Shears scored on Colton McElroy’s sacrifice fly to center to make it 3-0.
Neither team had a baserunner in the fourth. In the fifth Kamiah changed pitchers and Alex McElroy earned a leadoff walk. He was forced at second and Prairie was unable to score.
In the bottom of the fifth Kamiah got their first baserunner on a 1-out walk. The next batter was hit by a pitch giving the Kubs runners on first and second with only 1 out. Kamiah tried a double steal but catcher Dalton Ross threw out the runner at third for the second out and Kaschmitter got out of the inning with his no-hitter intact.
In the sixth the Pirates put together a 4-run rally. Kaschmitter beat out an infield hit with 1 out. Schwartz reached on an error. The runners moved up on a wild pitch. Travis Alfrey then singled up the middle to score Kaschmitter. A dropped fly ball in right off the bat of Lane Remacle scored Schwartz. Alex McElroy reached on another Kamiah error with Alfrey scoring. After the second out was recorded, Shears singled to left to score Remacle and make it 7-0.
In the bottom of the sixth Kaschmitter got 2 strikeouts then gave up his first hit of the game, a single up the middle. A double to right followed but the first baserunner was held at third. A hit batsman loaded the bases but Kaschmitter got out of the inning unscathed when the next hitter grounded to third for an easy forceout at the third base bag.
Prairie added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Kaschmitter beat out a bad hop infield single. Schwartz followed with a single to right. A passed ball advanced both runners. Kaschmitter then scored on Alfrey’s groundout to short to make it 8-0.
In the bottom of the seventh Kamiah got a leadoff single. After a strikeout, Kaschmitter gave up his second walk of the game. Coach Kyle Westhoff then pulled Kaschmitter in favor Schwartz.
A wild pitch moved the runners up then Kamiah scored their first run on an errant pickoff attempt. A bad throw during a rundown led to a second run by Kamiah.
Schwartz was able to strike out both batters he faced to end the game.
Kaschmitter gave up 2 runs on 3 hits with 13 strikeouts and 2 walks in 6 1/3 innings. Schwartz faced 2 batters and struck them both out.
Prairie had 7 hits in the game. Shears and Kaschmitter each had 2 singles. Ross, Schwartz and Alfrey each had 1 single. Shears and Alfrey each had 2 RBI while Colton and Alex McElroy and Remacle each had 1 RBI.
Prairie is now 3-1 on the season and 3-0 in league play. Their next game isn’t until after Spring Break when they take on the Kubs again at Cottonwood on Tuesday, April 13.
