Baseball split 2 league games
The Prairie baseball team played a pair of league home games this past week, beating Kamiah 13-1 on Thursday, April 15 and then losing to Genesee 10-20 on Monday, April 19.
A league game at Kendrick on Saturday, April1 17 was postponed due to lack of umpires. Prairie will now host Kendrick in a doubleheader on Monday, April 26 with the first game set to start at 3:30 p.m.
Vs Kamiah
Connor Schwartz closed out a 13-1 win over Kamiah with a 3-run homer in the bottom of the fifth that invoked the 10-run mercy rule. Connor Schwartz rounds third after hitting a game-ending 3-run homer against Kamiah.
Chase Kaschmitter tossed a 2-hitter giving up only an unearned run in the fifth.
Kaschmitter sailed through the first 2 innings, allowing just 1 baserunner on a walk.
The Pirates went out in order in the first but posted 5 runs in the second inning. Dean Johnson, in his first action of the season, reached on an error to lead off the second inning. Cody Kaschmitter pinch ran for Johnson and went to second on a wild pitch. He scored on Schwartz’s 1 out single up the middle. Travis Alfrey reached on an error. A wild pitch moved up both runners and Schwartz scored and Alfrey moved to third on a passed ball. Alfrey came in to score on an errant pickoff throw.
After a second out, Brody Hasselstrom worked a walk. Reece Shears also walked. Dalton Ross then doubled to center to score both runners and make it 5-0.
Kaschmitter gave up a single and walk to start the third inning the got the next 3 batters on a pair of comebackers to the mound and a strikeout.
Prairie added a run in the bottom of the third. Johnson singled to left but was a double play ball back to the pitcher gave Prairie 2 quick outs. Schwartz singled to right and Alfrey reached on an error. Lane Remacle walked to load the bases. Another infield error on a grounder by Hasselstrom allowed Schwartz to score to make it 6-0.
Kaschmitter gave up a leadoff walk to start the fourth inning but the baserunner was thrown out by catcher Ross trying to steal. Kaschmitter then got 3 straight strikeouts however the 1 in the middle reached as the ball got past the catcher.
Prairie added 3 runs in the third inning. Ross led off with his second double of the game and scored on Chase Kaschmitter’s single to left. After 2 strikeouts, Schwartz reached on an error with Kaschmitter going to third Schwartz then stole second. Both runners scored when Alfrey reached on another Kamiah error.
Kaschmitter hit the leadoff batter in the fifth but then got 2 quick outs. A single to left moved up the runner and a walk loaded the bases. The leadoff runner scored on an error but the inning ended when the second baserunner was thrown out trying to score also.
Up 9-1, Prairie needed 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule.
After 2 quick outs, Kaschmitter reached on a single to right. Kamiah changes pitchers, possibly due to pitch count, and Johnson greeted the new pitcher with a run scoring single up the middle. Colton McElroy was then hit by a pitch. On the first pitch of his at-bat Schwartz then ended the game with a long fly ball to right that cleared the fence for a 3-run homer.
We had Prairie with 9 hits led by Schwartz who had a homer and 2 singles and 4 RBI. Ross had 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Kaschmitter and Johnson each had 2 singles and an RBI.
Kaschmitter gave up 1 run on 2 hits with 4 walks, 1 hit batter and 11 strikeouts.

Vs. Genesee
It took the Pirates offense awhile to get going against Genesee and by the time it did they had dug a 0-13 hole.
3 walks and 2 doubles led to 3 runs in the first inning for Genesee against Schwartz who started on the mound for the Pirates.
Schwartz allowed just 1 baserunner in a scoreless second. A leadoff home run plus 2 errors and 2 singles led to a pair of runs in the third.
Meanwhile Prairie managed just 1 baserunner in the first 3 innings, a 1 out single by Ross in the first inning.
In the fourth inning things fell apart for Schwartz as he gave up 8 runs thanks to a couple of errors plus 6 hits. Schwartz was pulled with 2 outs and 2 runners on with 6 runs already in. Alfrey came on and gave up a 2-run triple before getting out of the inning with a groundout to short.
The Prairie offense finally came alive in the bottom of the fourth. Ross led off with a walk and Chase Kaschmitter followed with a double. Johnson singled to left to score Ross with Kaschmitter moving to third. Kaschmitter scored on a wild pitch. Johnson singled to left and Cody Kaschmitter went in as a pinch runner. Schwartz beat out an infield hit and McElroy singled to left to score Cody Kaschmitter. McElroy was forced at second with Schwartz moving to third. After a second out, Lane Remacle doubled to the fence in right center to score Schwartz and make it 4-13.
Alfrey gave up a leadoff single in the fifth then got 3 straight outs.
In the bottom of the fifth the Pirates’ rally continued with 4 more runs.
Ross again led off the inning with a walk then Genesee changed pitchers. Chase Kaschmitter singled and Johnson hit a 2-run double to deep centerfield. After an out McElroy walked and after a second out Hasselstrom singled to left to score both Johnson and McElroy and cut the deficit to 8-13.
Alfrey then ran into trouble in the sixth as 2 errors, 3 hit batters and 4 singles led to 7 runs. The ninth batter of the inning became the first out as Alfrey struck him out. After the fourth single, the Pirates got out of the inning on a double play as second baseman McElroy fielded a grounder, tagged the runner coming from first and threw to Johnson as first to end the inning.
Prairie needed 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth to keep the game going. Alex McElroy pinch hit to lead off the inning and worked a walk. After an out, Chase Kaschmitter tripled to straightaway center to score McElroy. Kaschmitter scored on a groundout to second by Johnson. Schwartz worked a walk but Genesee then got the third out to end the game on the 10-run mercy rule.
Prairie had 10 hits in the game. Chase Kaschmitter had a triple, double and single and an RBI. Johnson had a double and a single and 4 RBI. Remacle had a double and an RBI. Hasselstrom had a single and 2 RBI. Colton McElroy had a single and an RBI. Ross and Schwartz each had a single.
Schwartz gave up 13 runs on 11 hits with 3 strikeouts, 5 walks and 1 hit batsman in 3 2/3 innings. Alfrey gave up 7 runs on 6 hits with 2 strikeouts, no walks and 3 hit batsmen in 2 1/3 innings.
Prairie is now 4-2 on the season and 4-1 in league play.
