Greencreek won 1959-60 parochial school title
Editor’s Note: Marge Schumacher brought in the following article a while back feeling it may spark a few memories. This was the 1959-60 season and her husband Ambrose Schumacher was the Greencreek team’s coach.
St. Anthony’s School of Greencreek came from far behind in the final quarter to topple the favored Ravens of Sts. Peter & Paul  School, Grangeville, to win the CYO Camas Prairie grade school basketball championship.  The game was played Sunday afternoon at St. Gertrude’s Academy gym. In winning the Greencreek team took over possession of the traveling trophy awarded by area K.C. Councils. A win by Grangeville would have retired the trophy, as they had won it the past two seasons.
In a preliminary game Sunday, Our Lady of Lourdes School, Lewiston, overcame a two-point halftime lead of St. Maurus School, Ferdinand, to win by a score of 21 to 16.
In the championship game Sts. Peter & Paul scored on the opening tipoff and ran up an early lead, paced by the ten-point scoring of David Frei. The Ravens were ahead at the midway point 17-11, and when the second half started they pulled away again to lead by ten points during the third quarter. John Foltz, Sts. Peter & Paul center, and top rebounder, fouled out early and the efforts of his teammates to stem a tide of Greencreek baskets, resulted in a number of fouls. With Jerry Sonnen hitting for four quick baskets the St. Anthony team closed the gap during the final period, and with ten seconds left in the game and Sts. Peter & Paul ahead 29 to 28, Ray Wemhoff hit a field goal from the side of the key to give the Greencreek team its final margin of victory, 30 to 29.
Sts. Peter & Paul had defeated St. Maurus 46-11 and St. Anthony had defeated Our Lady of Lourdes 48-9 to enter the finals.
Trophies were presented to the champion and runner-up teams, with St. Maurus receiving the sportsmanship award. Father Method Korn, O.S.B., chaplain of St. Gertrude’s made the presentations.
In the championship game David Frei led the losers with 14 points, while Jerry Sonnen paced St. Anthony’s with 12. Foltz had 16 and Frei 15 in the Friday night win over St. Maurus. Greencreek was paced in the Friday night game with Lewiston by Sonnen with 11, Wemhoff with 10 and Ronnie Baerlocher with 10.
Players on the St. Anthony team were: Ray Nuxoll, Tim Baerlocher, Tony Jentges, Dennis Wassmuth, Robert Sonnen, Ralph Stubbers, Jim Schumacher, Giles Nuxoll, Roy Nuxoll, Vern Sonnen, Wayne Arnzen, Jerry Sonnen, Ronald Baerlocher, Ray Wemhoff, Kenneth Westhoff, John Crea, Urban Wessels and Jerry Wassmuth.
