27 turned out for football
There are 27 players turned out for the Prairie football team this season.
They will be led by seniors Tayden (T.J.) Hibbard, Lane Schumacher, Wyatt Ross, Evan Schwartz, Travis Alfrey, Brody Hasselstrom, Jesse Cronan and Connor Brown.
Juniors on the team are Shane Hanson, Levi Walsh, Colton McElroy, Quirt Goeckner and Ryan Wemhoff.
Sophomores are Trenton Lorentz, Ben Elven, Noah Behler, Ravin Cronan, Carter Christopher and Ethan Thompson.
Freshmen on the team are Eli Hinds, Briggs Rambo, Jake Quintal, Drake Cronan, Carter Shears, Tristian Mader, Noah Geis and Lukas Bennett.
The team will likely revolve offensively around returning running backs Hasselstrom and Hibbard. It looks like Schumacher will step into the starting quarterback role.
In the offensive line they have all-league center Hanson returning but will need to find replacements for player of the year Dean Johnson and all-league performer Matt Coppernoll.
The Pirates look to be favored to win the White Pine League again this year with C.V., Lapwai and maybe Genesee as contenders. A dark horse contender might be new league team Logos which is in their first year as a varsity program but showed well in JV games last year.
Ryan Hasselstrom returns as head coach and Jarod Cash returns as an assistant. New assistant coaches this year are Forrest Partlow and Tanner Ross. Partlow played college football and has some coaching experience. Ross is a PHS grad who played on the 2014 state championship team.
Pirates to play in 8-Man Classic
The Prairie football team will again take part in the 8-Man Classic at Middleton High School this Saturday, August 28.
Last year they opted out due to Covid.
There are 4 games scheduled with each game pitting a northern Idaho team against a southern Idaho team.
Prairie will play Glenns Ferry in the final game of the day with the kickoff set for 6:30 p.m. MDT. The game won’t start earlier than that but could start later depending on how the earlier games go.
Other games being played at Middleton on Saturday are Lapwai vs. Oakley at 11 a.m., followed by Kendrick vs. Lighthouse Christian at 1:30 p.m. and Clearwater Valley vs. Raft River at 4 p.m. All times are Mountain Time.

The Pirates run a blocking drill during practice this past Monday.
