Pirates win home opener 48-14
The Prairie football team rolled to a 48-14 win over Clearwater Valley in their home opener Friday, Sept. 10 at Cottonwood.
The Pirates started off strong as they received the opening kickoff and needed just 3 plays to score.
At their own 44 facing a third and 3, T.J. Hibbard lined up as wing to the right. Just prior to the snap he came in motion to the left and took a handoff and scooted around the left side and up the sidelines on a 56 yard scoring play. Brody Hasselstrom ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0 just 55 seconds into the game.
C.V. faced a fourth and 4 at their 46 on their first possession and lined up like they were going for it out of shotgun formation. Instead quarterback Anthony Fabbi took the snap and kicked the ball down to the Prairie 9 yard line.
Prairie moved the ball out to their 42 where they killed their own drive with a pair of blocking penalties. Lane Schumacher completed a screen pass to Hasselstrom that went for an apparent long gainer which was called back on an illegal block 13 yards downfield. A fumbled snap on the next play led to third and 13. After an incomplete pass, Prairie did their own quick kick with Schumacher punting the ball to the C.V. 34.
The Rams got a big play when Fabbi competed a 39 yard pass to Ridge Shown with Hasselstrom making the saving tackle at the Prairie 8. The Prairie defense stiffened at that point with Hibbard and Chase Kaschmitter combining to sack Fabbi on third down for a 4 yard loss back to the 16. Fabbi’s fourth down pass came up short and Prairie took over at the 16.
The Pirates sent Hasselstrom around the left end on their first play following and Hasselstrom raced downfield for an 84 yard scoring play. The 2-point run came up short leaving Prairie with a 14-0 lead.
C.V.’s first play following the kickoff was a long pass play that was intercepted by Colton McElroy at the Prairie 23. He returned it 2 yards to the 25 where the Pirates took over on offense.
Prairie ran the ball on 7 of 8 plays of the ensuing 75 yard scoring drive with Schumacher capping it off with a 12 yard run on a keeper to the left on the first play of the second quarter. Schumacher also had a 20 yard run to start the drive with Hasselstrom picking up 24 yards on 3 carries.
Schumacher passed to Wyatt Ross for the 2-pointer to make it 22-0.
On the Rams next possession they had a couple of big plays that moved the ball to the Prairie 20 before a false start penalty and an incomplete fourth down pass gave the Pirates the ball at their own 25.
Hasselstrom picked up 14 yards for a first down at the 39. A false start penalty then had the Pirates facing fourth and 7 at the 42. Schumacher rolled out to the right and connected with Hasselstrom for a 10 yard gain and a first down.
After a 3 yard run by Hibbard, Schumacher passed deep to Ross who wound up getting tackled at the 2 yard line after a 43 yard gain. Hasselstrom was stopped a foot short of the goal line on first down but went into the end zone on the next play. Schumacher ran in the 2-pointer to make it 30-0 with 6:31 left in the half.
C.V. put a drive together as they moved the ball to the Prairie 31 where they faced fourth and 5. The Rams then ran a trick play as Fabbi handed off to running back Dylan Pickering who was going left. Fabbi then went out to the right and Pickering passed the ball back to Fabbi. A miscue by the Pirate defender, who tried to strip the ball rather than make the tackled led to Fabbi breaking loose for a 31 yard scoring play. Prairie stopped the 2-point run making it 30-6. With 2:32 left in the half.
C.V. tried an onside kick with Shane Hanson recovering for the Pirates at the Prairie 44. A pass from Schumacher to Hibbard picked up 22 yards but on the next play Prairie fumbled the ball with C.V. recovering at their 42.
The Rams picked up just 3 yards on 3 plays before punting it back to the Pirates who took over at their own 19.
A sack of Schumacher by C.V. led to the Pirates punting it back and the Rams picked up just 4 yards before the first half ended.
After halftime the rains came and play got a little sloppy with a wet ball. Prairie kicked off to that the second half and forced C.V. to punt. However Prairie muffed the punt and C.V. recover at the Prairie 39.
The Rams picked up a first down on a fourth down run by Pickering that moved the ball to the 15. On the next play though, Pickering fumbled with Schumacher making the recovery at the Prairie 20.
Prairie needed 9 plays to go 80 yards for another score.
Hasselstrom converted a third and inches for a first down at the Prairie 41. On the next play Schumacher connected with Ross for a 29 yard gain to the C.V. 30. Hasselstrom picked up 12 yards on a pair of runs. Hibbard gained 2 to the 16 and Schumacher went up the middle on the next play for 16 yards and the touchdown. The 2 point try failed as Prairie led 36-6 with 4:22 left in the third quarter.
Prairie got the ball right back when Ross recovered a fumbled kickoff return that put Prairie at the C.V. 24.
The Pirates needed 5 plays to score with Hasselstrom taking it in from the 11 for the touchdown. That made it 42-6 when the 2-point try failed.
C.V. started at the own 40 after the kickoff return.
The Rams picked up a first down then stalled. On second and 11 Jesse Cronan had his feet go out from under him on the wet grass while pursuing Fabbi but still managed to get back up and made the tackle for a 3 yard loss. That helped lead to another C.V. punt with Prairie taking over at their own 30.
Prairie picked up a first down at the 47 on a 17 yard pass to Ross. However two plays later Hasselstrom slipped and a pitch to him wound up being scooped up by C.V.’s Jake Fabbi who made it all the way to the 2 yard line before being tackled. C.V. scored 2 plays later and added the 2-pointer to cut their deficit to 42-14.
After the kickoff Prairie gave it right back on another fumble with C.V. taking over at the Prairie 35.
Hibbard tackled Pickering for a 5 yard loss and Ravin Cronan stopped Anthony Fabbo for a loss with a holding penalty added on for a net 11 yard loss.
Fabbi got much of the yardage back on a 15 year run but on fourth and 11 he threw a pass that Schumacher took right out of the intended receivers hands for an interception at the 19 which he returned to the Prairie 27.
On the next play Schumacher made a perfect pass deep downfield to Ross who didn’t even have to slow down to catch the pass and took it to the end zone for a 73 yard scoring play. The 2 point try failed but Prairie now led 48-14 with 4:54 left to play.
C.V. misplayed the kickoff and wound up taking over at their own 12 yard line. On the first play, Fabbi and Shown ran into each other on the handoff and Jesse Cronan wound up tackling Shown for a 6 yard loss.
Fabbi managed to pick up the first down on fourth and 9 with a 19 yard scramble but Prairie forced a punt 4 plays later that went just 14 yards.
Prairie took over at the C.V. 45 and sent the second team offense on the field for the final 3 plays of the game.
Hasselstrom wound up with 224 yards rushing on 22 attempts. Hibbard added 76 yards on 10 carries and Schumacher 31 on 6 carries as the Pirates rolled up 327 yards rushing on 43 attempts.
Schumacher completed 8 of 14 passes for 212 yards. Ross had a huge day with 162 yards on 4 catches. Hasselstrom caught 3 for 28 and Hibbard 1 for 22.
Hasselstrom led the team in tackles with 8. McElroy had 6 tackles and an interception. Hibbard had 4.5 tackles and ½ a sack. Kaschmitter had 4 tackles and ½ a sack. Ravin and Jesse Cronan each had 4 tackles. Schumacher had 3 tackles and an interception. Ross had 3 tackles and a fumble recovery. Levin Walsh had 3 tackles. Hanson had 2.5 tackles. Carter Shears had a tackle and Noah Behler and Quirt Goeckner each had 0.5 tackles.
C.V. had 130 yards rushing on 37 attempts with Pickering picking up 79 on 16 carries. Fabbi was 6 for 21 with 2 interceptions for 73 yards passing. Pickering was 1 for 1 for 31 yards.
Prairie is now 2-0 on the season having won both games by identical 48-14 scores. They are 1-0 in league play. Their next game is Homecoming this Friday, Sept. 17 against Logos at 7 p.m.
