Pirates win Homecoming game 72-24
The Prairie Pirates opened up a 28-6 lead in the first quarter and went on to beat Logos 72-24 during Homecoming at Cottonwood Friday, Sept. 17. Brody Hasselstrom reaches the ball toward the end zone on one of his 6 touchdowns against Logos. Also shown are Shane Hanson and Chase Kaschmitter.
The game started well for the Pirates as they received the opening kickoff and took over at their own 45 after a squib kick.
Brody Hasselstrom and T.J. Hibbard combined for 17 yards on a pair of runs for a first down at the Logos 38.
After an incomplete pass, Hasselstrom picked up 6 on a sweep to the left. On the next play Prairie ran the counter as Hibbard ran a sweep to the right and went 32 yards for the game’s first touchdown. Hasselstrom added the 2-pointer for an 8-0 lead.
After Prairie’s kickoff went out of bounds, Logos made them re-kick and wound up taking over at the 50. It took the Knights just 1 play to score as quarterback Jack Driskill found Live Comis wide open behind the Prairie defense for a 50 yard scoring play. The 2-point try failed, leaving Prairie with an 8-6 lead.
Logos tried to capitalize on their momentum with an onside kick but Levi Walsh recovered at the Logos 47.
After a loss on first down, quarterback Lane Schumacher tossed a short pass to the left to Colton McElroy who took the ball for a 33 yard gain to the Logos 16.
Hibbard picked up 13 yards to set up first and goal and on the next play Hasselstrom went in from the three for the first of his 6 touchdowns on the night. The 2-point pass fell incomplete as Prairie led 14-6.
Shane Hanson kicked deep on the ensuing kickoff and Logos wound up taking over at their own 15. The Knights picked up a first down at the 26 then their drive stalled and they were forced to punt. Hasselstrom took the punt at the Prairie 30 and ran it all the way back for a touchdown. However, a blocking penalty at the Prairie 48 brought most of the return back and Prairie took over at their 38.
The Pirates ran the ball 6 straight times with Hasselstrom finishing off the 62 yard drive with a 17 yard sweep around left end for his second touchdown. The 2-point run came up short leaving Prairie with a 20-6 lead with 4:23 left in the first quarter.
Another deep kickoff had Logos starting at their own 28. On third and 9 at the 29 the pass rush hit Driskill as he was throwing and Hasselstrom came up with the interception at the Logos 40 and returned it to the 27.
Schumacher tossed a short pass to Hibbard that gained 14 yards and on the next play Hasselstrom covered the final 13 for his third touchdown of the game. Schumacher ran in the 2-pointer to give Prairie a 28-6 lead with 2:50 left in the first quarter.
Logos started their next possession at their own 33 and were still on the 33 when they punted. Hasselstrom caught the punt at the Prairie 30 and returned it to the 45.
Schumacher connected with Hibbard for an apparent 55 yard touchdown pass but it was called back on a penalty. Prairie wound up going for it on fourth and 14 at their own 41 and Hasselstrom came up 5 yards short on the final play of the first quarter.
Logos took over at the 50. After a 5 yard pass, Aiden Elmore took a pitchout to the left and got past the defenders for a 45 yard touchdown run that cut the deficit to 28-12.
The ensuing kickoff went out of bounds at the Prairie 35 and the Pirates took over at the 40. Hasselstrom picked up 25 yards on first down but then fumbled on the next play with Logos taking over at their own 30.
The Knights picked up a first down but then had to punt it back to the Pirates with the punt going out of bounds at the Prairie 40.
Hibbard ran the ball 4 straight times, picking up a total of 35 yards to move the ball to the Logos 25. Hasselstrom ran it the next 3 plays picking up 23 yards to the 2. A false start penalty set Prairie back to the 7 but Hasselstrom scored from there on the next play, breaking a tackled in the process. Schumacher ran in the 2-point conversion for a 36-12 lead with 6:46 left in the half.
On the ensuing kickoff the Pirates were called for a 15 yard penalty on a kickoff that apparently went out of bounds at the 9 although no one on the Prairie side heard a whistle to that effect. The penalty was marked off from the Logos 35 where the ball was placed after the kick out of bounds penalty and then moved to the 50 after the personal foul penalty.
Hibbard tackled Elmore for an 8 yard loss but Logos then completed a 29 yard pass to the Prairie 29.
A fumble on the next play saw Chase Kaschmitter recover the ball for the Pirates at the Logos 40.
After an incomplete pass, Schumacher connected with Hibbard for a 14 yard gain. Hasselstrom then picked up 41 yards around the left side before being tackled at the 5. On the next play Hibbard went up the middle for the touchdown. The 2-point run was stopped short and Prairie now led 42-12.
Another fumble by Logos gave Prairie the ball back at the Logos 25 where Hibbard made the recovery.
On the next play, Hasselstrom started right then cut back to the left and pretty much ran through a Logos defender into the end zone for his fifth touchdown of the game. Again the 2-point try failed as Prairie now led 48-12 with 4:11 left in the half.
On their next possession Logos tried a fake punt on fourth and 14 at their own 39. Their punter completed the pass but McElroy tackled the receiver 8 yards short of a first down as Prairie took over at the Logos 45.
Hasselstrom scored his sixth touchdown on the next play, going 45 yards for the score. Schumacher passed to Wyatt Ross for the 2-pointer to make it 54-12 with 3:16 left in the half.
Logos was forced to punt again but Prairie was stopped on fourth down at the 50. Logos managed to moved the ball down to the 16 before time ran out in the half.
The 42-point halftime lead meant the entire second half would be played with a running clock.
The Knights received the second half kickoff and went for it on fourth down at their own 28. McElroy batted the pass away and Prairie took over at that point.
Schumacher kept the ball on the next play and took it 28 yards for the score. Hasselstrom ran in the 2-point to make it 64-12.
Logos took over at their own 30 after the kickoff and converted a third down with a 36 yard pass play to the Prairie 33. A holding penalty and 3 straight incompletions closed out the third quarter with Prairie taking over at their own 41 to start the fourth quarter.
Ravin Cronan scored Prairie’s final touchdown of the night on a 55 yard run in the fourth quarter.Prairie had the ball on offense just 1 play in the quarter but outscored Logos 8-0.
Hasselstrom picked up 34 yards on the first play of the fourth quarter for what turned out to be his final carry of the game.
Prairie was stopped on fourth down at the Logos 20.
Against the second unit defense, Logos was able to mount another scoring drive, most just 1 play as Driskill connected with Comis again, this time for 70 yards to make it 64-18.
The subs went in on offense for Prairie after the kickoff and took over at the Prairie 32. Ravin Cronan had runs of 5 and 8 yards to give Prairie a first down and move the ball to the 45. On the next play Cronan burst through the middle and raced 55 yards to the end zone for Prairie’s final touchdown of the game. Eli Hinds ran in the 2-point conversion to make it 72-18 with 4:35 left.
Logos added one more score as their backup quarterback, Seamus Wilson, passed to Solomon Howard for 57 yards and a touchdown that made it 72-24.
Ben Elven recovered the onside kick try for Prairie at the Pirates 43. Hinds had a 27 yard run that gave Prairie a first down and allowed them to run out the clock.
For the game Prairie had 537 yards rushing led by Hasselstrom who had 278 yards on 21 carries with 6 touchdowns. Hibbard added 120 yards on 13 carries with 2 touchdowns. Cronan had 65 yards on 5 carries with a touchdown and Schumacher had 38 yards on 4 carries with a touchdown.
