Pirates win big at Kamiah
The Prairie football team improved to 5-0 on the season with a 60-20 win at Kamiah Friday, Oct. 1. Tayden Hibbard pulls away from a Kamiah defender on a long touchdown run in the second half.
Kamiah received the opening kickoff and were stopped on fourth down at the Kamiah 49.
Prairie took over and needed 11 plays to score. A pass from Lane Schumacher to Colton McElroy gained 12 for a first down. An 11 yard run by Brody Hasselstrom picked up another first down. The Pirates faced fourth and 3 at the Kamiah 18 and Hasselstrom went over the left side for 13 yards to set up first and goal at the 5. Hasselstrom gained 3 more to the 2 and on the next play Schumacher ran a bootleg around the left side for the touchdown. The 2-point try failed leaving Prairie with a 6-0 lead with 7:33 left in the first quarter.
It was 3 plays and punt for the Kubs with a high snap to the punter Brady Cox. Cox managed to gather up the ball over 20 yards behind the line of scrimmage and still get off a decent punt that rolled dead at the Prairie 41.
A facemask penalty helped move the ball to the Kamiah 41 for a first down. Tayden Hibbard then burst through the line for 15 yards and another first down at the 26.
A false start penalty, a 4 yard loss and an incomplete pass saw Prairie facing third and 19 at the 35. They picked up 11 of it on a shovel pass from Schumacher to Hasselstrom. On fourth and 8 at the 24, Schumacher connected with Wyatt Ross down the right side for 16 yards to set up first and goal at the 8.
3 plays later Hasselstrom took a pitch and went in from the 1 for the touchdown. The 2-point try again came up short as Prairie led 12-0 with 3:04 left in the opening quarter.
Kamiah fumbled the ball away on their first play after the kickoff with Hasselstrom making the recovery at the Kamiah 28.
Prairie unfortunately fumbled the ball right back 3 plays later with Kamiah recovering at their 29.
The Kubs put their first good drive together picking up 3 first downs as they moved the ball to the Prairie 15. A fumbled snap led to a 7 yard loss and on fourth and 8 from the 21, Kamiah quarterback David Kludt tried to pass for a first down but Schumacher intercepted at the 3. He took the ball most of the way downfield but a penalty at the Prairie 19 made Prairie start the drive just inside their own 10.
Hibbard picked up 23 yards over the left side. Schumacher gained 7 on a scramble and then Hasselstrom broke loose for a 44 yard gain to the Kamiah 16. On third and 2 at the 8, Hibbard burst up the middle for a touchdown. Hasselstrom ran in the 2-pointer to make it 20-0 with 6:35 left in the half.
Kamiah was forced to punt from their own 44 on fourth and 15 but Hibbard got through the line and blocked the punt with Trenton Lorentz recovering at the Kamiah 33.
A false start penalty led to the Pirates facing fourth and 9 at the 32 when Schumacher lofted a pass to Ross who broke free from the coverage and caught the ball at about the 2 and scored. Schumacher passed to Hibbard for the 2-pointer to make it 28-0 with 2:55 left in the half.
Kamiah’s Ryan Lockart made a huge kickoff return taking the ball 52 yards from his own 18 to the Prairie 30.
On Third and 8 from the 28, Kamiah got on the scoreboard when Kludt completed a 28 yard pass to Cox for the touchdown. Kamiah added the 2-pointer to cut the deficit to 28-8 with 2:02 left in the half.
Prairie took over at their own 29 and went into a 2-minute drill. After 2 incompletions and an 8 yard completion to Ross, Hasselstrom picked up the first down on a run to the left, getting out of bounds to stop the clock at the 37.
Schumacher then got hot, completing 4 straight passes. He completed a pass to Hasselstrom down the right side for 10 yards. The next pass went to McElroy for 14 but he didn’t get out of bounds forcing coach Ryan Hasselstrom to call a timeout with 22 seconds left. McElroy gained another 14 yards on a reception and got out of bounds this time to stop the clock. Schumacher then completed a pass to Ross who took the ball into the end zone for a 17 yard scoring play with 6.7 seconds left in the half. Schumacher passed to Ross for the 2-pointer to make it 36-8 which is where the score stood at the half.
Prairie received the second half kickoff, starting at their own 35. Prairie ran the ball 9 straight times with Hasselstrom picking up 28 on one play and Hibbard 15 on another. Hibbard’s run set up first and goal at the 9. Prairie wound up facing fourth and goal at the 2 with Hasselstrom scoring on a pitch to the left. The 2-point pass failed leaving the score at 42-8.
Kamiah got into Prairie territory at the 45 where they faced a fourth and 5. They were held to just 4 yards and Prairie took over at their own 41.
It took Prairie just 1 play to score as Hibbard burst through the middle and went 59 yards for the touchdown. The 2-point run failed but Prairie now led 48-8, invoking a running clock for the rest of the game with 5:54 left in the third quarter.

That made it 48-14 with 1:29 left in the third quarter.
Prairie again needed just 1 play to score and it turned out to be their final offensive play of the game. Schumacher lofted a perfect pass downfield to Hibbard who didn’t have to break stride as he caught the ball and finished off a 56 yard scoring play. The 2-point try failed making it 56-14 with 33 seconds left in the third. The clock continued to run through the 2-point try and Prairie wound up kicking off to start the fourth quarter.
Four plays into Kamiah’s drive, Schumacher made his second interception of the game and this time took it 45 yards to the end zone for a touchdown. The 2-point try again came up short as Prairie led 60-14 with 9:06 left to play.
Kamiah took over after the kickoff at their own 33. Kamiah’s offensive subs went against Prairie’s defensive subs and the Kubs managed to score on an 8 yard pass with 42 seconds left. Time ran out during the 2-point try so the only time Prairie had the ball in the fourth quarter were on 2 kickoffs and an interception return and ensuing 2-point try.
The Pirates wound up with 257 yards rushing on 33 attempts. Both Hibbard and Hasselstrom went over 100 yards with Hibbard gaining 144 on 12 carries and Hasselstrom 106 on 16 carries.
Schumacher was 12 for 19 passing for 203 yards. Ross caught 4 passes for 73 yards. Hibbard cught 3 for 69. McElroy caught 3 for 40 and Hasselstrom 2 for 21.
Kamiah had 163 yards rushing led by Williamson who had 107 yards on 17 carries. Kamiah passers were 12 for 19 with 2 interceptions for 108 yards.
Defensively Jesse Cronan had 9.5 tackles to lead the team. Hassesltrom had 8.5 tackles and a fumble recovery. Hibbard had 7.5 tackles, a sack and a blocked punt. Chase Kaschmitter had 6 tackles. Schumacher had 4.5 tackles and 2 interceptions, 1 for a touchdown. Ross had 4 tackles. Levi Walsh had 3.5 tackles. Shane Hanson had 3 tackles. Ravin Cronan and McElroy had 2.5 tackles each. Ben Elven had 2 tackles. Lorentz and Noah Behler each had 1.5 tackles. Evan Schwartz and Noah Geis each had 1 tackle and Carter Shears had ½ a tackle.
Prairie is now 5-0 on the season and 4-0 in league play.
This week they host Lapwai who is 4-1 on the season and 4-0 in league play Friday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m.
