Pirates clinch league title
The Prairie football team clinched their fourth straight White Pine League Division 1 championship with an 84-50 win at Genesee Friday, Oct. 15.
The Pirates jumped out to a 38-0 lead then Genesee lost their starting quarterback to injury and actually got better. Lane Schumacher heads for the end zone after making an interception. Also shown is Shane Hanson.
Prairie received the opening kickoff and went 80 yards in 9 plays to take the lead. The drive started with a 27 yard pass from Lane Schumacher to Wyatt Ross. Then the running game took over. Brody Hasselstrom picked up 8 yards and 2 plays later Tayden Hibbard gained 20 on a burst up the middle.
The drive ended with Hasselstrom going untouched up the middle for 6 yards. Hasselstrom then ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0.
A horsecollar tackle against Genesee on the 2-point conversion led to Prairie kicking off from the Genesee 45. That led to Genesee starting from their own 13.
After 3 plays netted -1 yards, Genesee punted with Hasselstrom returning the punt 21 yards to the Genesee 29 yard line.
It took only 1 play for Prairie to score again as Hibbard burst through the middle for 29 yards and the touchdown. Schumacher passed to Colton McElroy for the 2-pointer to make it 16-0.
Hanson twice kicked off out of bounds and both times Genesee made Prairie rekick. After the third kickoff, Genesee wound up starting from their own 44. They didn’t have the ball very long as Schumacher jumped a pass out in the right flat and took the ball back 40 yards for a touchdown. Hasselstrom ran in the 2-pointer to make it 24-0 with 7:15 still left in the first quarter.
Genesee was forced to punt again with Prairie taking over at their own 35.
The Pirates faced fourth and 5 at their own 40 and converted as Ross caught a slant pass from Schumacher and gained 27 yards to the Genesee 27.
Disaster nearly struck on the next play as Schumacher bobbled the ball but recovered for a 7 yard loss. On the next play though, Schumacher found Ross open down the left side for a 40 yard touchdown. The 2-point pass failed but Prairie now led 30-0 with 3:49 left in the first quarter.
On Genesee’s next possession the Bulldogs went for it on fourth and 8 from their own 17 and Hanson’s pass rush forced an incomplete pass.
Prairie took over and needed just 1 play to score as Hasselstrom went up the middle for 17 yards. Schumacher passed to Hibbard for the 2-pointer to make it 38-0 with 2:01 still left in the first quarter.
Genesee finally got on the scoreboard when Jack Johnson returned the ensuing kickoff 81 yards for a touchdown. The 2-point try failed as Prairie still led 38-6.
Trenton Lorentz looked like he was going to make it back-to-back kickoff returns for touchdowns as he took a short kickoff at the Prairie 36 and returned it to the Genesee 14 where he fumbled with Genesee recovering.
Genesee got a first down at the 30 but then faced a fourth and 7 at the 33. Cy Wareham was in punt formation but passed to his brother Teak Wareham for 27 yards and a first down at the Prairie 40.
Hibbard then tackled Kole Riebold for a 4 yard loss and he combined with Chase Kaschmitter and Hanson to stop Johnson for a 3 yard loss. Cy Wareham was now in for starter Angus Jordan at quarterback and completed a pass to Dalton McCann for 33 yards but McCann fumbled with McElroy making the recovery at the Prairie 25.
Schumacher passed to McElroy for 10 yards and a first down but got hurt on the play. He missed just 2 plays. Meanwhile Hasselstrom ran the ball on 3 straight plays, picking up a total of 13 yards for a first down. Hibbard ran a counter for 13 then Hasselstrom picked up 15 for a first down at the Genesee 21. Schumacher showed he had shaken off the effects of the injury as he ran the ball into the end zone for a 21 yard scoring play. Schumacher then passed to Ross for the 2-pointer to make it 46-6.
On Genesee’s next possession they final scored on offense with Wareham completing 3 high arching passes during the drive for 50 yards total including the final 21 to McCann for the touchdown. The 2-point run was stopped leaving the score at 46-12.
Ross appeared headed for a 94 yard kickoff return touchdown but it got called back due to an illegal block that had Prairie starting on their own 17.
Hibbard carried the ball for 48 yards around the right side on the next play to move the ball to the Genesee 35. Hasselstrom picked up 14 on a sweep to the right and then Hibbard went 21 yards over the left side, breaking a tackle at the 15 for a touchdown. Schumacher passed to McElroy for the 2-pointer to make it 54-12.
Genesee answered back with another scoring drive of their own as Wareham completed 3 more of his high arcing passes. The touchdown came on a 34 yard completion from Wareham to Johnson. The same duo connected for the 2-pointer to make it 54-20 with 34 seconds left in the half.
Genesee received the second half kickoff and tried to maintain their momentum but Hasselstrom broke up a fourth down pass attempt at the Genesee 33.
Prairie took over at that point. Hasselstrom went up the middle for 17 yards and Hibbard gained 10 up the middle to set up first and goal at the 6. Schumacher carried the ball into the end zone on the next play but it was called back due to a holding Brody Hasselstrom stiffarms a would-be tackler. Also shown are Quirt Goeckner and Colton McElroy.penalty. Hasselstrom got 9 yards on the next play and Hibbard picked up 4 to the 2 yard line. Hasselstrom then scored on the next play. Schumacher passed to Ross for the 2-pointer to make it 62-20 and invoke the running clock at the 9:56 mark of the third quarter.
After taking over at their own 45, Genesee needed just 1 play to score. Wareham ran a couple of fakes before giving off to Johnson who burst through middle for 55 yards. Wareham ran in the 2-pointer to make it 62-28.
Prairie answered back with a 4-play, 54 yard drive that ended with Hasselstrom catching a pass over the middle and completing a 24 yard scoring play. Schumacher ran in the 2-pointer to make it 70-28.
Genesee again scored as well in a drive that carried into the fourth quarter. A 52 yard pass completion from Wareham to Wareham set Genesee up at the 16 and 5 plays later Cy Wareham scored from the 2. The 2 point pass fell incomplete making it 70-34.
Prairie need just 1 play to answer as Kaschmitter recovered the onside kick attempt at the Prairie 47. On the next play Hibbard went 53 yards over the right side for another Prairie touchdown. Hasselstrom ran in the 2-pointer to make it 78-34.
Prairie got the ball right back on the Genesee 25 when the Bulldogs fumbled on their first play after the kickoff. Kaschmitter recovered the ball for the Prairie defense.
On Prairie’s first play after the turnover Hasselstrom started around the right side, reversed his field and went all the way back to the left and took the ball 25 yards into the end zone. The 2-point run failed as Prairie now led 84-34.
Genesee answered right back with a 1-play drive of their own after taking over at their 45 after a 14 yard kick return. Johnson had his second 55 yard touchdown run on the same play he scored previously. Wareham then passed to Johnson for the 2-pointer to make it 84-42.
Prairie took over after the kickoff at their own 18. They sent the second unit out and they came up short on a fourth and 3 from their own 25. Genesee took over at the Prairie 26 and kept their starters on the field against the Prairie backups and added one more touchdown as Wareham completed a 26 yard pass to his brother Teak. Teak Wareham then ran in the 2-pointer to make it 84-50 with 34 seconds left.
After the kickoff, Prairie didn’t even need to run a play as the clock ran out.
The Pirates had 551 yards of offense in the game with 394 coming on the ground on 34 attempts. Hibbard had a huge game with 221 yards on just 10 carries with 3 touchdowns. Hasselstrom added 140 yards on 17 carries with 4 rushing touchdowns.
Schumacher completed 10 of 14 passes with 1 interception, for 157 yards and 2 touchdowns. Ross caught 5 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. Hasselstrom caught 2 for 25 with a touchdown. McElroy caught 2 for 19 yards and Hibbard caught 1 pass for -1 yard.
Genesee had 380 yards of offense with 129 rushing and 251 passing. Johnson gained 116 yards rushing on 12 attempts with 110 of those coming on just 2 carries.
Wareham completed 12 of 20 passes for 237 yards and Jordan was 2 for 9 with 1 interception for 14 yards. Teak Wareham caught 4 passes for 127 yards and McCann caught 5 for 61 yards.
Kaschmitter led the defense with 8.5 tackles including half a sack and a fumble recovery. Hibbard had 5.5 tackles and a sack. Hasselstrom also had 5.5 tackles. Hanson has 5 tackles with half a sack. McElroy had 4 tackles. Lorentz and Ross each had 3.5 tackles. Schumacher had 2 tackles plus an interception he returned for a touchdown. Levi Walsh and Jesse Cronan each had 1.5 tackles.
Prairie is now 7-0 on the season and 6-0 in league play. Their final regular season game is Senior Night this Friday, Oct. 22, against Troy.
