Pirates win two of three
The Prairie boys suffered their first loss of the season when they got swamped by Lapwai 40-84 Thursday, Dec. 9, but bounced back with a win at Genesee, 59-40, Saturday, Dec. 11 and at home over Orofino Monday, Dec. 13, 76-49
Vs. Lapwai
In the game against Lapwai, Prairie was able to hand with the Wildcats into the second quarter, even taking the lead at one point. Lapwai then flipped a switch and dominated the rest of the contest.
Lapwai closed out the first half with a 44-30 lead and carried a 30-3 run into the third quarter as they wound up outscoring the Pirates 40-10 in the second half.
The entire fourth quarter was played with a running clock.
Zach Rambo led the Pirates in scoring with 19 points with Lane Schumacher also in double figures with 12. Lee Forsmann scored 5 and Shane Hanson 4.
Lapwai also won the JV game 27-53.

At Genesee
At Genesee, Prairie broke open a close game in the second quarter on their way to a 19 point win.
Both teams were hitting from 3-point range in the opening quarter although Prairie mixed in a few 2-pointers to take a 15-12 first quarter lead. Zach Rambo goes for 2 at Genesee.
Forsmann started the scoring with a basket inside then Genesee answered with a 3 from Jack Johnson. Rambo hit a 3 but Genesee’s Cameron Meyer answered with a 3. Wyatt Ross hit from the baseline to put Prairie back on top but Meyer answered with a 3. Schumacher put Prairie back into the lead with a 3 and Forsmann added a putback for a 12-9 lead. Johnson hit a 3 to tie it but Rambo sank his second three for a 15-12 first quarter lead.
Prairie never trailed again.
Morgan Poxleitner made a free throw to open the second quarter but Genesee answered with their only 2 point basket of the first half.
Prairie then went on a 13-0 run to take control of the game. Schumacher scored to start the run then Rambo had 3 straight baskets. Hanson scored inside and Forsmann completed the run with a 3-poointer.
Genesee broke the run but Forsmann scored in the final seconds to make it 31-17 at the half.
Prairie scored the first 6 points of the second half with Forsmann opening the scoring with a lay-up. Their next 4 points were all free throws: 2 by Rambo, 1 by Forsmann and another by Rambo.
Genesee finally got on the board again with a 3 by Meyer at the 5:04 mark. After a putback by Rambo, Meyer hit another 3. An 8-0 run by Prairie followed with Hanson starting it with 2 free throws. Schumacher scored following a steal by Rambo then Hanson and Travis Alfrey each scored a putback for a 47-23 lead.
Prairie led 51-30 after 3 quarters.
Genesee outscored Prairie 8-10 in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs made 3 more threes and added a free throw. Prairie had 5 different players contribute to their 8 points with Noah Behler collecting his first varsity points late in the game.
Rambo wound up with 17 points to lead the Pirates in scoring Forsmann scored 13 and Hanson 10. Schumacher scored 7, Poxleitner 5, Alfrey 3 and Ross and Behler 2 each.
Prairie outrebounded the Bulldogs 49-30 led by Poxleitner with 11. At 6’9” we think Poxleitner might be the tallest Prairie Pirate ever. Forsmann almost had a double-double with 9 rebounds.
Rambo had 5 steals and Ross had 6 assists.
Prairie was 23 for 64 from the field, 36%, and 9 for 19 at the line, 47%. Genesee was 14 for 45 from the field, 31%. 11 of their 14 baskets were 3-pointers. They were 1 for 2 at the line, 50%.
Meyer was their leading scorer with 21 points on 7 for 13 shooting, 7 of 12 from 3-point range.
Prairie also won the JV game 36-19.
It was a slow start for both team with Benny Elven getting Prairie on the board first at the 3:47 mark of the first quarter. And he wasn’t a starter. Genesee came right back to tie it but Elven scored again and Prairie never surrendered the lead again. Trenton Lorentz scored to make it 6-2 and Genesee got a putback at the buzzer to make it 6-4 after 1.
Elven drove in for a basket to start the second quarter scoring. Colton McElroy and Noah Behler each added a second quarter basket as the slow scoring pace continued. Prairie led 12-9 at the half.
Prairie doubled their score in the third quarter, outscoring Genesee 12-5. Lorentz scored the first 4 points of the quarter. After a Genesee basket, Elven scored the next 4. After another Genesee score, Weston Riener and Lorentz each scored a putback for a 24-13 lead. Genesee closed the scoring with a free throw as Prairie took a 24-14 lead into the fourth quarter.
Behler scored 6 of Prairie’s 12 fourth quarter points with Lorentz, McElroy and Elven each scoring 2 as Prairie pulled away to win by 17.
Elven wound up as the leading scorer with 12 points. Lorentz scored 10, Behler 8, McElroy 4 and Riener 2.
Prairie had a 58-32 edge on the boards led by Matt Wemhoff with rebounds. Riener and Lorentz each had 8 and Connor Forsmann and Behler each had 7.
Wemhoff had 5 steals and 4 assists. McElroy added 3 assists and Elven had 3 steals.
The JV’s were 15 for 63 from the field, 24%, and 5 for 15 at the line, 33%. Genesee was 7 for 32 from the field, 22%, and 4 for 10 at the line, 40%.

Vs. Orofino
Monday night against Orofino the Pirates came out firing as they hit 8 of their first 11 shots in the game and wound up 11 for 16 in the first quarter with six 3-pointers as they built a 30-6 lead.
Lee Forsmann goes around an Orofino defender for a lay-up.Rambo hit 5 of 6 shots in the quarter including 3 for 3 from long distance and added 2 free throws for 15 first quarter points. Schumacher was 4 for 5 with two 3’s and 10 points while Lee Forsmann was 2 for 2 with a 3.
Orofino ended the first quarter with a 3 of their own to make it 30-9.
Prairie scored the first 7 points of the second quarter to run their lead to 37-9. Ross and Rambo each had a 2-point basket and Forsmann converted a 3-point play.
The hot shooting cooled off in the second quarter but Prairie still held a 46-23 lead at the half as Rambo had 19 first half points while Forsmann had 11 and Schumacher 10.
Prairie’s first 3 baskets of the second half were 3-pointers, 1 by Schumacher and 2 by Rambo. Rambo then added 2 free throws for a 29 point lead at 57-28.
The offense cooled off the rest of the quarter as Orofino outscored them 4-10 with Schumacher and Hanson each scoring a basket for Prairie.
Orofino got the deficit down to 21 in the fourth quarter at 67-46 but Prairie then ran off 9 straight points to invoke the running clock with 1:16 to play. Rambo started the run with a 3 then Poxleitner scored the next 6 Prairie points as they took a 76-46 lead.
Orofino scored the game’s final points on a 3.
Rambo wound up with 30 points to lead the Pirates. Schumacher scored 15, Forsmann 13, Ross and Poxleitner 8 each and Hanson 2.
Prairie had a 40-29 advantage on the boards as Forsmann and Poxleitner each had 8 to lead the team. Rambo and Schwartz added 6 boards each.
Schwartz had 3 steals and 8 assists while Schumacherhad 2 steals and 6 assists. Ross added 2 steals and 4 assists.
Prairie was 28 for 59 from the field, 47%, and 9 for 11 at the line, 82%. Orofino was 20 for 51 from the field, 39%, and 4 for 11 at the line, 36%.
Prairie is now 4-1 on the season and 1-1 in league play.
The JV game was one of the streakier games we’ve ever seen. Prairie jumped out to an 18-8 lead in the second quarter. Orofino then went on a 2-22 run to take a 10 point lead. Later Prairie went on a 14-0 to retake the lead and wound up winning 45-42.
Prairie led just 10-6 at the end of the first quarter as Elven scored 5 on a 3-pointer and 2 free throws while McElroy scored a 3-pointer and Behler a 2.
Prairie opened the second quarter with an 8-2 run with Wemhoff scoring after a steal and Behler sinking two 3-pointers. That put them up 18-8 with 3:15 left in the half. Prairie then went ice-cold and didn’t score again until the 3:23 mark of the third quarter, nearly 8 minutes of clock time.
Orofino closed the half with a 0-8 run to pull within 18-16 and then opened the second half with 6 more points to take an 18-22 lead.
McElroy scored 2 free throws then Orofino scored 8 more points for a 20-30 lead. They led 22-34 after 3 quarters.
Elven scored a pair of baskets to open the fourth to get the deficit to 8 at 26-34. Orofino still led by 9 at 28-37 with 4:22 to play.
The Maniacs then turned the ball over on 9 straight possessions, 5 of those via steals by the Pirates as Prairie scored 14 straight points to retake the lead. Logan Weber started the run with 2 free throws. A steal by Behler led to a putback by Wemhoff. A steal by Elven led to him scoring a lay-up. An out of bounds turnover led to a basket by Trenton Lorentz. A steal by McElroy led to a free throw by Wemhoff. A steal by Lorentz led to a basket by Wemhoff that put Prairie into the lead. Another Orofino turnover led to a free throw by McElroy. Wemhoff then stole the ball and scored a basket for a 42-37 lead.
Orofino broke the run with a free throw then had a lane violation negate a second free throw. Lorentz scored on a putback to make it 44-38. Lorentz then picked up his fifth foul with Orofino making both free throws. Wemhoff made a free throw with 31.7 seconds left for a 45-40 lead. Orofino scored to cut the deficit to 3. Prairie had a chance for more free throws but missed them both and Orofino’s buzzer-beating 3-point try missed.
Elven scored 13 and had 14 rebounds to lead the team in both categories. Wemhoff scored 10, Behler 8, McElroy 6, Lorentz 4 and Weston Riener and Weber 2 each.
Rebounding was even up at 49-49. Behler was also in double figures with 12 rebounds.
Wemhoff, McElroy and Elven each had 4 steals and Behler and Wemhoff each had 3 assists.
Prairie was 16 for 76 from the field, 21%, and 9 for 17 at the line, 53%. Orofino was 17 for 42 from the field, 40%, and 8 for 24 at the line, 33%.
