School Board meets
The School Board held their December meeting Monday, Dec. 20.
They formally approved the emergency school closures of Nov. 22-23 and Dec. 14.
Meeting dates for January and February were discussed since both regular dates fall on holidays. It was decided to move the January meeting to Wednesday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. but keep the February meeting the same, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m.
The school calendar for 2022-23 was approved. School will start on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 and end on Friday, June 2, 2023. There will again be two weeks off for Christmas Break. Spring Break was moved to the last week of March which lines up with most other schools in the area.
The board voted to adopt the updated policy #5100 which deals with hiring process and criteria. The updated section dealt with assistant coaches.
The board also voted to accept the resignation of bus driver Gary Milliman which is effective Jan. 14. Superintendent Jon Rehder said he has someone interested and hopes to have a recommendation for hire in early January.
The bus inspection report by the state came back with a lot of positives and some minor issues that need to be corrected.
The state’s maintenance inspection was also done recently with some minor issues  that need to be fixed.
Board members discussed the workshops they attended at the Idaho School Board Association convention.
In the administrative reports Matt Elven said they have a real issue with attendance. One issue is that the district attendance policy was recently updated but those changes didn’t make their way to the student handbook. He also has 23 students that have at least 5 unexcused absences already. You’re allowed up to 9 in the entire school year before you’re dealing with losing credits.
In the rest of his report he noted the football banquet was held Nov. 29. 3 players have since been named first team all-state.
They had a UI representative visit on Dec. 9.
The Idaho County Shootout raised over $14,000 in cans and donations between the two schools.
The Christmas Concert went well last Wednesday, Dec. 15.
They are looking at ordering new softball uniforms this year. There are currently 16 girls planning on turning out.
The PHS Alumni games are set for Dec. 27.
Senior project presentations will be done on January 12.
Rehder reported their R3 assembly was held Dec. 16. The November one was cancelled due to the school closure.
The Christmas concert was well-attended and Santa Claus put in an appearance.
In his facilities report he said Lindsleys will be in this week to put carpet squares on the ramp from the cafeteria to the gym.
They decided not to remove the risers in the band room as that project turned out to not be as easy as it may sound.
They are looking at switching out the lights in the Auxiliary Gym to LED lights through an Avista grant. They will get the lights ordered in 2022 and look at late May or summer time to install them.
They decided to go ahead with the cameras talked about at the last meeting. In addition to adding 6 more at the high school they will get 10 for the Elementary School as it has almost zero camera coverage at this time. Cost is about $45,000 and they are looking at using Covid money for this.
A possible future project Rehder is looking into is the entrance at the high school gym. He is looking at expanding the foyer out to where the poles on the overhang are now. The area to the right of the current entrance would then be made into a new men’s restroom with the current women’s and handicapped restrooms being combined into a larger women’s restroom. The current men’s restroom would then become the new handicapped restroom with a changing table.
In his superintendent’s report he noted they were able to provide assistance to 14 families through anonymous donations.
Dave Shears would like to get on a more regular rotation of bus purchases.
They had a few Covid cases at the school prior to Thanksgiving which led to the school closure Thanksgiving week.
The meeting adjourned to an executive session at 9 p.m. The next regular meeting will be Wednesday, July 19 at 7 p.m.
