Pirates win twice
The Prairie Pirates won a pair of road games this past week. On Tuesday, Jan. 4, they traveled to Weippe and defeated Timberline 56-24. On Saturday, Jan. 8, they traveled to Troy and won a league game 62-31.
At Timberline
The game at Timberline was fairly close in the first quarter with Prairie taking a 13-9 lead. They stretched the lead to 27-14 by halftime and really opened things up in the third quarter where they outscored the Spartans 25-6 to take a 52-20 lead into the fourth quarter.
The final quarter was played with a running clock and each team scored just 4 points.
Zach Rambo led the Pirates in scoring with 26 points. Lee Forsmann was the second leading scorer with 8 points with Kyle Schwartz scoring 7, Shane Hanson 6, Lane Schumacher 5 and Wyatt Ross 4.
There was no JV game.

At Troy
In the game at Troy the Pirates jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never trailed. Rambo opened the scored with a 3-pointer and Forsmann followed with another 3-pointer. Lane Schumacher puts up a 3-point shot at Troy where he led all scorers with 21 points.
After Troy got on the scoreboard, Forsmann made the second of 2 free throws. After another Troy basket, Rambo hit his second 3 of the quarter and Schumacher scored a putback for a 12-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Troy opened the second quarter with a free throw then Prairie ran off 10 straight points to push the lead to 22-5. Morgan Poxleitner started the run with a lay-up  then Schumacher converted a 3-point play. Rambo scored a basket and Forsmann a free throw. Rambo then finished the 10-0 run with a drive to the hoop.
Troy then came back with a 0-8 run of their own to get back within single digits at 22-13. Forsmann broke the run with a lay-up but Troy answered to make it 24-15 at the half.
Troy scored the first 4 points of the second half to cut the lead to just 5 points then Prairie took control with a 20-0 run. Schumacher started it with a basket. Forsmann converted a 3-point play and then added a lay-up that resulted from a steal by Rambo. Schumacher then scored the next 11 points. He hit a pair of 3-pointers, then a 2-pointer after another Rambo steal. He stole the ball himself and converted a 3-point play. Schwartz finished off the 20-0 run with a lay-up that made it 44-19 with 2:38 left in the third quarter.
Troy finally broke the run with a basket at the 2:18 mark. Ross answered with a basket. Troy added 4 more points before Forsmann closed out the third quarter scoring with a basket for a 48-25 Prairie lead after 3 quarters.
Hanson scored the first 4 points of the fourth quarter. After Troy answered with a basket, Hanson was at the free throw line for a 1 and 1. After he missed Troy’s Chandler Blazzard rebounded the miss and scored a lay-up. . .in Prairie’s basket. As he followed his missed shot, Hanson wound up as the closest Prairie player and got credit for the 2 points.
A free throw by Poxleitner and a putback by Hanson made it 57-27 with 5:43 left and invoked the running clock. A 3 by Schumacher made it 60-27 with 5:14 left. Troy outscored Prairie 2-4 from that point on with Noah Behler scored Prairie’s points on a putback.
Schumacher wound up with 21 points to lead the scoring. 16 of those were in the second half, 13 in the third quarter alone. Forsmann scored 14, Rambo 10, Hanson 8, Poxleitner 3 and Ross, Schwartz and Behler 2 each.
Troy had a 37-40 edge on the boards. Schwartz led the Pirates with 11 rebounds.
Schwartz and Rambo each had 3 steals while Schumacher and Ross each had 5 assists.
The Pirates were 25 for 60 from the field, 42%, and 6 for 16 at the line, 38%. Troy was 14 for 49 from the field, 29%, and 2 for 5 at the line, 40%.
Prairie committed just 6 turnovers in the game compared to 19 for Troy.
The Pirates are now 8-1 on the season, 4-1 in league play.
The JV team won their game 56-41.
Like the varsity, the JV’s took an early lead and never trailed. Weston Riener got the scoring started with a basket and then added a 3-pointer. Matthew Wemhoff scored from the elbow to make it 7-0. After a 3 by Troy, Colton McElroy drove to the hoop for a lay-up to make it 9-3.
Wemhoff and McElroy each added a basket as Prairie led 13-7 at the end of the quarter.
Noah Behler opened the second quarte with a basket then Troy got back within 4 at 15-11. Briggs Rambo and McElroy each scored to push the lead back to 8.
Their biggest lead of the first half came after Benny Elven scored with 1:26 left to make it 25-15. Troy scored in the final second to make it 25-17 at the half.
Prairie opened the second half with a 14-2 run to blow the game open. Wemhoff started it with a drive to the hoop. Elven and Wemhoff then each scored after a steal. Troy made 2 free throws then Elven, Behler, Wemhoff and Rambo each scored a basket to make it 39-19.
Troy outscored Prairie 2-6 to finish the quarter but Prairie still led 41-25 after 3.
The fourth quarter was played nearly even as Troy outscored Prairie 15-16. Behler scored 6 in the final quarter while Dylan Uhlenkott scored 3 and Elven, Riener and Rambo each scored 2.
Wemhoff wound up as the leading scorer with 13 points with Behler adding 10. McElroy scored 9, Elven 8, Riener 7, Rambo 6 and Uhlenkott 3.
The JV’s had a 40-32 edge on the boards led by Behler who had a double-double with 13 rebounds.
Wemhoff also had a double-double as he had 11 steals while McElroy had 6. Riener and Wemhoff each had 3 assists.
The JV’s were 23 for 48 from the field, 48%, and 9 of 18 at the line, 50%. Troy was 16 for 50 from the field, 32%, and 7 for 16 at the line, 44%.
The C team also had a home game against Clarkston on Friday, Jan. 7 where they lost 31-36.
