Pirates win 2 of 3
The Prairie Pirates won 2 of 3 league games this past week, playing them all on consecutive days. On Thursday, Jan. 20, they traveled to Lapwai where they got pounded 69-110 by the undefeated Wildcats. On Friday, Jan. 21, they hosted Troy and bounced back for a 56-29 win. On Saturday, Jan. 22 they hosted Genesee and won that game 61-42.
At Lapwai
The game at Lapwai was between the #1 and #2 ranked teams in the statewide polls. Lapwai showed there is quite a gap between #1 and #2 as they jumped out to a 15-43 lead by the end of the first quarter and led 35-70 by halftime.
They extended the lead to 52-96 after 3 quarters and then cruised in the fourth quarter under the running clock as Prairie managed to outscore Lapwai 17-14 in the final frame.
Zach Rambo led the Pirates in scoring with 21 points while Wyatt Ross put up a season high 16 points. Lee Forsmann scored 13, Kyle Schwartz 11, Lane Schumacher 6 and Morgan Poxleitner 2.
Lapwai meanwhile had 3 players scored over 20 points in the game. They made 44 field goals including 18 3-pointers.

Vs. Troy
Prairie shook off the loss from the night before and won easily over the Troy Trojans Friday at Cottonwood. Lee Forsmann scores against Troy
Forsmann started the scoring then Troy tied it at 2-2. Prairie then reeled off 15 straight points. Schumacher started things with a basket inside. Rambo scored a putback. Forsmann scored inside. Rambo scored after a steal by Schwartz and then converted a 3-point play. Poxleitner finished off the run with a lay-up.
Troy then broke a nearly 6 minute scoreless streak with a basket. A steal by Schwartz who scored a lay-up made it 17-4.
Troy scored a free throw on a technical foul for an illegal substitution. Apparently Shane Hanson didn’t suit up against Lapwai and his name and number weren’t in the book for the Troy game.
Rambo hit a 3 to make it 20-5 at the end of the quarter.
Prairie then outscored Troy 15-2 in the second quarter holding the Trojans scoreless until the 1:00 mark. They opened the quarter with 11 straight points with Schumacher scoring 8 of those. Hanson scored a free throw and Forsmann added a putback.
After Troy scored 2 free throws to break the run, Prairie closed the half with a basket each by Forsmann and Schumacher for a 35-7 halftime lead.
The Pirates’ intensity dropped in the third quarter and Prairie outscored Troy just 13-12. Schumacher scored 6 in the quarter and Rambo scored 5 with Forsmann adding the other 2 points.
Prairie took a 48-19 lead into the fourth quarter.
Despite starting the quarter 1 point shy of invoking a running clock, the game was completed without going to a running clock as Troy scored the first 5 points of the fourth quarter and outscored the Pirates 8-10 in the final frame.
Noah Behler scored 4 in the fourth quarter and Schumacher and Colton McElroy added 2 each.
Schumacher wound up with 20 points to lead the Pirates while Rambo scored 15 and Forsmann 10. Behler scored 4. Schwartz, Poxleitner and McElroy scored 2 each and Hanson scored 1.
Prairie had a 41-33 edge on the boards led by Schwartz who had 11 for the Pirates. Rambo added 8 and Forsmann 7 rebounds.
Schwartz had 4 steals and 8 assists while Schumacher had 3 steals and Rambo had 3 steals and 4 assists.
Prairie was 24 for 60 from the field, 40%, and 6 for 7 at the line, 86%. Troy was 12 for 42 from the field, 29%, and 4 for 9 at the line, 44%.
Prairie also had little trouble in the JV game as they won 50-28.
Morgan Poxleitner started the scoring with a lay-up and Troy answered. Poxleitner then scored 2 putbacks to put Prairie up for good. After a Troy basket, Colton McElroy scored a free throw and Weston Riener and McElroy followed with a basket each for an 11-4 lead.
After a Troy 3-pointer, Trenton Lorentz scored to give Prairie a 13-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Prairie outscored Troy 18-4 in the second quarter as they started the period with 10 straight points. Matthew Wemhoff had 2 baskets while Kaden Duclos, Poxleitner and McElroy each added a basket.
After a Troy basket, McElroy sank a 3-pointer. After another Troy basket, Prairie closed out the half with 5 straight points. Poxleitner had 2 baskets and Riener had a free throw as Prairie took a 31-11 halftime lead.
Prairie outscored Troy just 10-7 in the third quarter as Reiner and Noah Behler scored 4 points each and Benny Elven scored 2.
In the fourth quarter Prairie subbed in the C team players and got outscored 9-10. Dylan Uhlenkott scored 5 points including a 3-pointer with Cole Duclos and Briggs Rambo each scoring 2 points.
For the game Poxleitner had a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds despite playing just the first half. McElroy scored 8, Riener scored 7. Uhlenkott scored 5. Wemhoff and Behler scored 4 each and Lorentz, Rambo, Elven, Kaden Duclos and Cole Duclos scored 2 each.
Prairie dominated the boards 63-35. McElroy was also in double figures in rebounds with 11.
Wemhoff had 4 steals. McElroy had 3 steals and 3 assists and Elven had 3 assists.
The JVs were 23 for 75 from the field, 31%, and 2 for 14 at the foul line, 14%. Troy was 12 for 47 from the field, 26%, and 2 for 8 at the line, 25%.

Vs. Genesee
In the game against Genesee, Prairie trailed after the first quarter but took the lead by halftime and built on it in the second half.
They may have been showing the effects of 3 games in 3 days in the first quarter. Prairie started well as they took a 5-1 lead on 2 free throws by Forsmann and a 3-pointer by Rambo.
TZach Rambo goes for 2 of his game-high 31 points against Genesee. It was also his birthday.ey then went cold as Genesee outscored them 1-9 the rest of the quarter with a free throw by Ross being Prairie’s only score.
Genesee made it a 6 point lead early in the second quarter then Prairie went on an 8-0 run to retake the lead.
Rambo scored 2 free throws. A steal by Schumacher led to a lay-up. Forsmann scored a free throw and then Rambo hit a 3 for a 14-12 Prairie lead.
The two teams traded baskets with Genesee tying it at 14 and again at 16 before a lay-up by Rambo put Prairie ahead for good. Schwartz added a basket to make it 20-16.
Genesee hit a 3 to pull within 1 but a putback by Forsmann gave Prairie a 22-19 halftime lead.
Rambo opened the third quarter with a pair of 3-pointers to quickly put Prairie up by 9.
After a Genesee basket, Prairie scored 7 straight to take a 14-point lead. Rambo and Forsmann each scored a basket. Schumacher sank 2 free throws and Forsmann added a free throw to make it 35-21.
Rambo scored the final 7 points of the quarter on a 3-pointer and 2 baskets as Prairie took a 45-29 lead into the fourth.
Early in the fourth quarter Ross went to the line for an apparent 1 and 1. He missed and Forsmann scored a putback. That basket was later wiped out when it was determined it should have been only the 6th team foul on Troy.
Therefore Troy scored the first points of the fourth then Rambo and Schumacher each made a 3 to push the lead to 20 points.
After 2 Troy baskets, Schumacher hit a 3 and Hanson added a free throw to push the lead back to 20.
Forsmann scored 5 of Prairie’s final 6 points on 3 free throws and a putback. Behler scored the final point for the Pirates while Troy scored the final basket of the game.
Rambo scored 31 points, on his 18th birthday, to lead all scorers. Forsmann added 14 points and 16 rebounds. Schumacher scored 9, Hanson 3, Schwartz 2 and Ross and Behler 1 each.
Prairie had a 41-37 rebounding edge.
Rambo and Schumacher each had 3 steals and Schwartz had 3 assists.
Prairie was 17 for 52 from the field, 33%, and 17 for 26 at the line, 65%. Genesee was 17 for 56 from the field, 30%, and 4 for 5 at the line, 80%.
Prairie is now 11-3 on the season and 7-3 in league play.
The JV team won their game 51-23.
Prairie jumped out to a 123-0 lead as they never trailed. Wemhoff started it with a lay-up. Lorentz drove in for a lay-up. Poxleitner scored a putback. McElroy drove for a lay-up. Lorentz scored after a steal and then finished the run with a putback.
Genesee finally scored at the 3:46 mark and outscored Prairie 2-10 the rest of the quarter with a steal and lay-up by Behler being Prairie’s only points as they led 14-10 after 1 quarter.
Prairie took back control with a 10-2 start to the second quarter. A putback by Poxleitner and a steal and lay-up by Elven made it 18-10. After a Genesee basket, Prairie got a basket each from Poxleitner, Lorentz and Wemhoff for a 24-12 lead.
Poxleitner added 2 more baskets with Behler adding a basket and Wemhoff a free throw as Prairie took a 31-17 lead at the half.
Prairie scored the first 8 points of the third quarter for a 39-17 lead. Behler scored 6 of those 8 on a basket, 3-pointer and free throw. McElroy added 2 free throws.
Genesee scored their first points of the second half at the 3:23 mark and those were their only points of the third quarter.
Prairie scored 4 straight to end the third quarter and 6 more to start the fourth and take a 49-19 lead. That started the running clock with 5:02 left in the game.
Poxleitner scored 13 to lead the Pirates with Lorentz and Behler each scoring 10. Wemhoff scored 5. McElroy scored 4. Elven, Rambo, Kaden Duclos and Dylan Forsmann each scored 2 and Logan Weber scored 1.
Prairie dominated the boards 40-21. Poxleitner had his second straight double-double with 12 rebounds.
McElroy and Lorentz each had 4 steals and McElroy and Wemhoff had 2 assists each.
Prairie was 22 for 52 from the field, 42%, and 6 for 13 at the line, 46%. Genesee was 9 for 34 from the field, 26%, and 3 for 8 at the line, 38%.
