Pirates split first 2 District games

The Prairie Pirates are going to have to make it the hard way if they are going to State this season. They opened District Tournament play with a 74-47 win over C.V. at Cottonwood on Wednesday, Feb. 16. In second round action, with a state berth on the line, they lost to Kamiah 35-44 at Lewiston on Monday, Feb. 21.
Their next game will be Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. against Potlatch at Lewiston High School in a loser out game. If they win, they would play the Genesee-Logos winner on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. That winner travels to Coeur d’Alene’s Lake City High School for a play-in game at noon against the District 1 champion, which appears to be Lakeside of Plummer.

Vs. CV

In the Pirates District opener against C.V., it was a close game for a half then Prairie broke it open in the second half.
C.V. scored first in the game but Lane Schumacher answered with a 3 to give Prairie their first lead. Zach Rambo shoots for 2 of his 32 points against C.V.

Zach Rambo added a basket to make it 5-2 but C.V. came back with 2 baskets to retake the lead with 4:04 left in the quarter.
A lay-up by Morgan Poxleitner gave Prairie back the lead but C.V. tied it with a free throw.
Schumacher sank another 3 but C.V. answered with a 3 of their own to tie it at 10. Another 3 by Schumacher gave prairie the lead for good.
A basket each by Wyatt Ross and Shane Hanson gave Prairie a 17-10 lead at the end of the quarter.
The second quarter was the Rambo show on offense for Prairie as he scored all 13 points for the Pirates in the period.
C.V. hung in there and managed to cut the lead down to 3 at halftime, 30-27.
The Pirates dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Rams 22-5 to take control of the game.
Ross scored to open the second half then Hanson made 2 free throws and then a basket for a 36-27 lead.
After a C.V. 3, Rambo scored on a drive to the hoop. C.V. scored again to make it 38-32 but Prairie then scored the final 14 points of the quarter.
Hanson made 2 free throws to start the run. Kyle Schwartz, in his first action in a couple of weeks, scored from the baseline. Rambo then made a basket, 2 free throws and another basket to make it 48-32. Ross closed out the quarter with a basket and then 2 free throws for a 52-32 lead at the end of 3.
Hanson scored to open the fourth quarter and give Prairie a 54-32 lead. C.V. hoy no closer than 18 the rest of the way. That came after a pair of 3-pointers cut a 24 point lead down to 18 at 62-44. Prairie responded with a 12-0 run to take a 30-point lead with 28 seconds left.
C.V. hit a final 3-pointer for the final 27 point margin.
Rambo wound up with 32 points to lead the scoring. Schumacher added 12, Ross 11 and Hanson 10 while Schwartz scored 5 and Poxleitner 4.
Lee Forsmann suited up for the game but would’ve played only if necessary as he continues to heal from the sprained ankle he suffered at Logos.
Prairie had a 40-36 edge on the boards led by Ross who had 11 rebounds. Hanson added 7.
Rambo had 5 steals and 6 assists while Schumacher had 3 steals and 8 assists.
Prairie was 29 for 60 from the field, 48%, and 10 for 17 at the line, 59%. C.V. was 19 for 54 from the field, 35%, and 1 for 7 at the line.
C.V. had 25 turnovers while Prairie had just 10.

n the semifinal game against Kamiah the Pirates got off to a hot start, making their first 5 shots of the game. After that though they struggled to score, especially in the second half when they scored just 12 points total.
Kamiah led early 0-2 and 2-4 then Prairie took their first lead with a 6-0 run. Schwartz scored on a runner. Ross scored a lay-up and Rambo drove in for a basket to make it 8-4. After a Kamiah basket, Schumacher sank a 3-pointer to make it 11-6.
Kamiah cut the lead to 1 then Prairie ended the quarter with a baseline shot by Rambo and a lay-up by Hanson to make it 15-10.
Kamiah outscored Prairie 2-7 over the first 4 minutes of the second quarter to tie the game at 17. Forsmann then scored his first basket since the Logos game on a putback that put Prairie back into the lead. Rambo added a basket and Schwartz scored after making a steal to give Prairie a 23-17 lead at the half.
In the third quarter Kamiah scored the first 5 points to cut the lead quickly to just 1 point. Forsmann hit a pair of free throws to push the lead back to 3. After a Kamiah basket, Forsmann made the second of 2 free throws to make it 26-24.
Kamiah tied it with 4:40 left in the third. Schumacher then gave the Pirates their final lead of the game on a lay-up with 4:13 left. Prairie scored just 7 points over the final 12 minutes of the game.
Kamiah tied it with 2:47 left then took the lead for good on a 3 pointer by Kavan Mercer with 1:57 left. Forsmann scored inside to cut the deficit to 1 but another 3 by Mercer made it 30-34 at the end of the third quarter.
Neither team scored in the fourth quarter until the 4:26 mark when Kamiah’s Luke Krogh converted a 3-point play.
There was no scoring for more than 2 minutes before Forsmann made a free throw at the 2:07 mark. Schwartz then stole the inbounds pass and scored a lay-up to pull the Pirates within 4 at 33-37. Prairie didn’t score again until Forsmann scored a putback at the buzzer. In the meantime Kamiah scored 7 straight points.
For the game Forsmann was the Pirates high scorer with 10 points. He scored 8 of Prairie’s 12 second half points. Rambo added 8, all in the first half. Schumacher scored 7, Schwartz 6 and Ross and Hanson 2 each.
Prairie is now 16-6 on the season.
