Pirates lose opener
The Prairie baseball team opened their season with a 5-9 loss at Kendrick Monday, March 14.Chase Kaschmitter hits a bases-loaded 3-run double at Kendrick.
Starting pitcher Colton McElroy pitched out of trouble in the first two innings but couldn’t in the third as Kendrick piled up 6 runs to go on to win.
Prairie went down in order in the top of the first inning.
In the bottom of the first,  Kendrick’s leadoff hitter beat out a dribbler up the third base line. He stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. After a strikeout, McElroy gave up a walk. He then induced a popup to first and a flyball out to center to get out of the inning.
After two outs in the top of the second, Prairie got their first baserunner as Alex McElroy worked a walk. Carter Shears followed with a walk but Kendrick then got out of the inning with a strikeout.
In the bottom of the second, Colton McElroy gave up a 1 out single and a 2 out hit batsman but stranded both runners.
Prairie went out in order in the third. In the bottom of the third Kendrick got a leadoff single and stolen base and then a walk. A passed ball moved the runners up and a sacrifice fly to center scored the game’s first run. A double knocked in a second run and a walk followed. McElroy was then taken out and Chase Kaschmitter went in to pitch. Kaschmitter gave up a short single to left to load the bases. A walk then forced in a run and a single to right plus an error allowed 2 more runs to score. The sixth run came home on a wild pitch before Kaschmitter got out of the inning with a popup and a strikeout.
Prairie got a couple more 2-out baserunners in the fourth as Noah Behler was hit by a pitch and Alex McElroy again drew a walk. A strikeout ended the inning.

In the fifth Prairie finally got on the scoreboard. Jake Quintal hit a flare to right that was dropped by the right fielder for an error. After an out, Cody Kaschmitter picked up Prairie’s first hit of the game with a single up the middle. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. After a second out, Colton McElroy walked to load the bases for Chase Kaschmitter. He doubled to the gap in right to score all 3 runners. Kendrick then changed pitchers and got out of the inning.
In the bottom of the fifth Kaschmitter gave up a single and a hit batsman but stranded the runners.
The sixth inning is where Prairie could’ve got back into the game as Alex McElroy led off with by getting hit by a pitch. Shears followed with a single to right and Quintal beat out an infield hit to load the bases with nobody out. Two strikeouts and a flyball out later Kendrick was out of the inning with nobody scoring.
In the bottom of the sixth Kendrick added 3 runs. A hit batsman and 2 stolen bases put a runner on third. The runner then came in to score on a dropped third strike and the ensuing play at first for the out. The next batter reached on a passed ball on strike 3. A walk then ended Chase Kaschmitter’s outing on the mound. Behler came on and gave up a 2-run double, a walk and a run scoring single before getting the final out. That made the score 3-9.
In the top of the seventh Colton McElroy led off with a single to right and Chase Kaschmitter beat out an infield hit. After 2 strikeouts, Shears hit a grounder to third and both runners scored on the ensuing error. Kendrick then got the final out to end the game.
Chase Kaschmitter had a double and a single and 3 RBI. Cody Kaschmitter, Colton McElroy, Shears and Quintal each had a single.
Colton McElroy pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up 4 runs on 4 hits with 3 walks, a hit batsman and 2 strikeouts. Chase Kaschmitter pitched 3 1/3 innings allowing 5 runs on 3 hits with 2 walks, 1 hit batsman and 8 strikeouts. Behler pitched 1/3 of an inning and gave up no runs, 2 hits and 1 walk.
Prairie is now 0-1 on the season and in league play.
