Pirates rally late twice for wins
The Prairie baseball team won a pair of league games this past week with late inning rallies. On Thursday, March 17, they scored 12 runs in the 6th inning to beat C.V. 13-3 at Kooskia. On Friday, March 18, they scored 9 runs in the 7th inning to beat Kamiah 13-6 at Kamiah.
At C.V.
The Pirates picked up their first win of the season against Clearwater Valley but it took a rally in the top of the sixth to do it. Noah Behler slides into home with the go-ahead run in Prairie’s game at C.V. He scored on a 2-run single by Dylan Uhlenkott that made it 4-3. Prairie went on to score 9 more runs in the inning to blow out the Rams 13-3.
The Pirates scored first as Cody Kaschmitter hit a 1-out single down the line in left. Colton McElroy moved Kaschmitter to third with a single to left and then stole second. Noah Behler single to left to score Kaschmitter and give Prairie a 1-0 lead.
Colton McElroy started on the mound for the Pirates and struck out C.V.’s first 2 hitters. He then got a little wild and walked the bases loaded before getting out of the inning with another strikeout.
Prairie went down in order in the second and C.V. tied the score in their half of the inning on singles.
Prairie got a 1 out walk from Cody Kaschmitter in the third and he wound up at third when Colton McElroy reached on a fielder’s choice. The two runners were then stranded as C.V. got out of the inning with a grounder to short.
C.V. took the lead in the bottom of the third on a leadoff single and a 1 out double, both to right field.
In the fourth Carter Shears reached on an error but was then caught stealing.
McElroy put the Rams down in order in the fourth. In the fifth the Pirates were set down in order.
Behler came on to pitch as McElroy was facing the pitch limit. He gave up a leadoff walk that came around to score for a 1-3 C.V. lead.
In the top of the 6th, the Pirates got to C.V. starter Trebor Altman for the first time since the opening inning. Chase Kaschmitter led off with a single to right. Colton McElroy followed with a single to left. Behler beat out an infield hit to load the bases. After an out, Dylan Uhlenkott singled to left to score Chase Kaschmitter and McElroy to tie the score. Jake Quintal followed with a single to right to score Behler and chase Altman. Landon Schlieper came on to pitch and struggled to get anybody out as the Pirates wound scoring 9 more runs in the inning with Chase Kaschmitter hitting a 3-run homer for the big hit.
Behler was able to get out of the bottom of the sixth with no runs scored and the game ended on the 2-hour time limit.
For the game Colton McElroy had 3 hits, including a double. Chase Kaschmitter had a single and a homer and 3 RBI. Cody Kaschmitter, Owen McIntire, Quintal, Behler, Shears and Uhlenkott each had a single as Prairie totaled 11 hits.
Colton McElroy pitched 4 innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits with 3 walks and 9 strikeouts. Behler pitched 2 innings and allowed 1 run on 1 hit with 1 walk and 2 strikeouts and 1 hit batsman.

At Kamiah
For the second game in a row a late game rally led to a Pirates win.
InAlex McElroy made his pitching debut as the “opener” for the Pirates at Kamiah. He pitched 2 shutout innings before giving way to Chase Kaschmitter. the opening inning, Cody Kaschmitter had a base hit but was the Pirates’ only baserunner.
Alex McElroy, in his high school pitching debut, was Prairie’s starter on the mound. He walked Kamiah’s leadoff hitter then got a pair of strikeouts and a foul popup to catcher Cody Kaschmitter to get out of the inning.
The Pirates went down in order in the second inning.
Alex McElroy again walked the leadoff hitter and also walked the next hitter. He got a pair of called strike 3’s then gave up another walk to load the bases. He got another strikeout to end the inning with Cody Kaschmitter having to throw the batter out at first after the strikeout pitch got away.
In the third inning McIntire was hit by a pitch with 1 out but was then forced at second and a short fly ball to third ended the inning.
In the bottom of the third Chase Kaschmitter took over on the mound and had a rough start. The first 5 batters all reached base on a hit batsman, single, error, walk and single with 3 runs scoring. He got a strikeout then gave up a walk to load the bases. Another error led to a run and a single scored 2 more runs before he got a strikeout and popup back to the mound to get out of the inning with 6 runs scoring.
Prairie got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning. Chase Kaschmitter led off with a single to right center. He went to second on a wild pitch. Colton McElroy reached on an error with Chase moving to third. Behler then hit into a fielder’s choice, forcing Colton McElroy at second with the throw getting past the first baseman allowing Chase to score.
That made it 1-6.
Chase Kaschmitter settled down on the mound after his rough inning and gave up just 1 baserunner on a walk over the next 3 innings.
Prairie got back into the game in the bottom of the sixth. Chase Kaschmitter drew a 1 out walk. Colton McElroy followed with a single to right. Behler was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Shears was then hit by a pitch to force home Chase Kaschmitter. Quintal hit a comebacker to the mound to force McElroy at home. Uhlenkott then doubled to right field to score both Behler and Shears and cut the deficit to 4-6.
In the top of the seventh Kamiah changed pitchers and the Pirates quickly for to the new pitcher. Alex McElroy opened the inning with a single to right. Cody Kaschmitter reached on an error. Chase Kaschmitter singled home Alex McElroy. Colton McElroy reached on an error that loaded the bases. Behler hit into a fielder’s choice with Cody Kaschmitter scoring and no outs recorded. Chase Kaschmitter then scored on an error by the catcher trying to get him at third. Shears singled to right to score Colton McElroy and Behler. Quintal singled up the middle. Shears scored on another error by the catcher. Quintal stole second and scored when McIntire reached on an error. Alex McElroy singled to right center and Kamiah changed pitchers again. Cody Kaschmitter walked to load the bases and Chase Kaschmitter singled to scored McIntire. Colton McElroy was hit by a pitch to force home his brother Alex to make it 13-6.
With Chase Kaschmitter having hit the pitch limit, he and his brother Cody traded places in the bottom of the seventh. Cody Kaschmitter struck out the first batter he faced then put two runners on with a hit batsman and a walk. He then caught two batters looking at strike 3 to seal the win for the Pirates.
Prairie had 10 hits in the game led by Chase Kaschmitter who had 3 singles and 2 RBI. Alex McElroy had 2 singles. Uhlenkott had a double and 2 RBI. Cody Kaschmitter, Colton McElroy, Shears and Quintal each had a single.
Alex McElroy pitched 2 innings allowing  no runs on no hits with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts. Chase Kaschmitter pitched 4 innings allowing 6 runs on 3 hits with 3 walks, 1 hit batsman and 8 strikeouts. Cody Kaschmitter pitched 1 inning allowing no runs on no hits with 1 walk, 1 hit batsman and 3 strikeouts.
Prairie is now 2-1 on the season and in league play.

Pirates to compete in tournament this weekend
The Prairie baseball team will compete in the Southfork Slugfest at Clearwater Valley’s baseball field in Kooskia this weekend.

On Thursday, March 24 they will play Troy at 1 p.m.
On Friday, March 25 they will play Wilder at 9 a.m.
On Saturday, March 26 they will play at either 10 a.m. (if they lost both Thursday and Friday), at 1 p.m. (if they are 1-1 after the first two games) or at 4 p.m. (if they won both Thursday and Friday.)
