Pirates swept by Genesee
The Prairie baseball team were swept by Genesee in a league doubleheader played at Clarkston Friday, April 15. They lost the opener 2-7 and then lost the second game 1-2 despite allowing no hits to the Bulldogs.
It was scheduled as two 5-inning games with the second game going into extra innings.
A home doubleheader against Nezperce that was scheduled for Tuesday, April 12, was postponed due to weather and rescheduled for Monday, April 25 starting at 3:30 p.m.
Game 1
The games were originally to be played at Genesee but moved to Clarkston’s Field of Dreams due to wet conditions at Genesee.Reese Shears reaches first on an infield hit just before the throw arrives in the opening game.
Noah Behler started on the mound for the Pirates and set down the Bulldogs in order in the first inning. In fact he didn’t allow a baserunner until the third inning.
Reese Shears led off for the Pirates in the bottom of the first and beat out and infield single and then stole second. After an out, Chase Kaschmitter doubled to left to score Shears for a 1-0 Prairie lead.
Genesee’s #9 hitter was their first baserunner after their were 2 outs in the third inning. He reached on an error and stole second. He went to third on a throwing error and scored on Genesee’s first hit of the game, a double to left by their leadoff hitter. That tied the score at 1-1.
Prairie went down in order in both the second and third innings.
In the top of the fourth, Prairie’s defense got a little sloppy and basically gave Genesee 6 outs. After a leadoff walk, an infield pop-up fell right behind the pitcher’s mound as no one took charge to make the play. After a fly ball out to center, a pop fly that fell behind shortstop, barely into the grass scored the go-ahead run for the Bulldogs. A forceout at second scored another run. A dropped fly ball led to another run scoring. After a hit batsman, a single up the middle scored 2 more runs. Another hit batsman and a 2-run single made the score 1-7 in favor of the Bulldogs.
In the bottom of the fourth Prairie put a threat together as Chase Kaschmitter and Colton McElroy each singled and Behler walked to load the bases. A ground ball to first forced Kaschmitter at the plate. Trenton Lorentz hit into a forceout at second with McElroy scoring to make it 2-7. Dylan Uhlenkott was walked to load the bases but a ground ball to short ended the threat.
Each team had 1 baserunner in the fifth but the game ended with the Bulldogs winning.
Prairie had 4 hits. Chase Kaschmitter had a single and a double and an RBI. Reese Shears and Colton McElroy each had a single while Lorentz had an RBI.
Behler gave up 7 runs on 5 hits with 1 walk, 2 hit batsmen and 7 strikeouts. Prairie had 4 actual errors plus a couple of mental errors that helped Genesee score most of their runs.
Cameron Mayer pitched all 5 innings for the Bulldogs and picked up the win.

Game 2
The second game was a pitcher’s duel between Chase Kaschmitter of the Pirates and Jack Johnson of Genesee.
Cody Kaschmitter doubled to center with 1 out in the first inning and Colton McElroy drew a 2-out walk but neither was able to score.
Genesee got a pair of first inning baserunners on a catcher’s interference and a walk but Chase Kaschmitter struck out the other 3 batters leaving the game scoreless.
Prairie went down in order in the second inning.
Kaschmitter walked the leadoff hitter in the second inning but catcher Cody Kaschmitter threw him out trying to steal. After a strikeout, Genesee loaded the bases on 2 walks and an error before Chase got out of the inning with another strikeout.
In the third Cody Kaschmitter reached on a 2-out error but was then forced at second to end the inning.
In the bottom of the third an error put the leadoff hitter on then Chase Kaschmitter got out of the inning with a fly ball to left, ground out to second and a strikeout.
Prairie was able to push a run across in the fourth. Colton McElroy reached on an error to lead off the inning. After 2 outs, Lorentz singled to right to score McElroy with the game’s first run.
Chase Kaschmitter walked 2 hitters in the bottom of the fourth but stranded the runners to keep Prairie on top 1-0.
Prairie went down in order in the top of the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth, Johnson struck out on a curveball in the dirt but reached first when the ball got past the catcher. The next Genesee batter bunt on the first pitch and reached on an error with Johnson advancing to third. The batter was then called out for stepping on home plate before making contact on his bunt attempt. However, Johnson was allowed to remain at third base with just 1 out. Johnson then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
In the top of the sixth Prairie got a 1-out single from Colton McElroy but the next two hitters struck out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth Genesee’s leadoff batter reached on an error as Chase Kaschmitter hit the limit on his pitch count and Colton McElroy was brought in. McElroy struggled to find the plate walking the first batter on 4 pitches. After a groundout to second, he walked the next two batters to force home the game-winning run.
Kaschmitter allowed 2 unearned runs in 5+ innings on no hits with 6 walks and 10 strikeouts. McElroy pitched 1/3 of an inning allowing 3 walks.
Prairie had 3 hits. Cody Kaschmitter had a double. Lorentz had an RBI single and Colton McElroy had a single.
Prairie is now 4-6 on the season and 3-3 in league play.
