Pirates rally to beat Genesee
The Prairie football team fell behind 0-16 in the first quarter but rallied to win at Genesee 50-22 Friday, Sept. 23.
Eli Hinds gains some of his 167 yards rushing against Genesee. In the background is quarterback Colton McElroy.
The Pirates may have been a little out of sorts to start the game as Trenton Lorentz, who had provided much of their offense in the first 3 games, was headed to surgery to have his appendix removed as they were leaving Cottonwood. He will be out this Friday against Kamiah as well and possibly miss the Lapwai game on Oct. 7 as well.
Genesee won the coin toss and chose to receive. They took the ball at their own 39 and needed 10 plays, the first 9 of them running plays, to cover 61 yards and score the game’s first touchdown. The scoring play was a 17 yard pass from quarterback Angus Jordan to Nolan Bartosz. Jordan then ran in the 2-pointer to make it 0-8.
Genesee then apparently recovered an onside kick but were penalized for kicking off before the referee blew the whistle to start.
Prairie wound up with the ball at their own 36 after the re-kick. The Pirates moved the ball well behind Eli Hinds and Jake Quintal running the ball. A 28 yard pass from Colton McElroy to Hinds moved the ball to the Genesee 17. At that point the drive stalled as Prairie turned the ball over on downs at the 12.
Jordan connected with Bartosz for 62 yards on the next play and another 13 yards was added on due to a horsecollar tackle penalty. 2 plays later Jorden ran the ball into the end zone from the 11 and then passed the ball to Bartosz for the 2-pointer for a 0-16 Genesee lead.
Dylan Uhlenkott recovered the short Genesee kickoff at the Prairie 46 yard line.
The Pirates converted a third and 6 when McElroy completed a pass to Quirt Goeckner for 17 yards. Two runs by Hinds netted 11 yards and another first down at the 20. McElroy connected with Goeckner again for 19 yards to the 1. McElroy then ran a quarterback sneak for the Pirates first touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. The 2-point try failed making the score 6-16.
A penalty on the Pirates on a short kickoff allowed Genesee to start their possession on the Pirates 39. A pass interference penalty gave Genesee a first down at the 26. On the next play quarterback Angus Jordan suffered a leg injury on a 1 yard run and had to leave the game. His brother Wyatt Jordan took over at quarterback.
Genesee had a first down at the 11 before things went bad. A high snap set them back to the 25 and 2 plays later McElroy intercepted as pass at the 3 and returned the ball to the 37.
3 plays later the Pirates scored. McElroy carried for 15 yards then passed to Ben Elven for 23 yards. Hinds then went up the middle for 22 yards for the touchdown. The 2-point try failed making the score 12-16.
On their next possession Genesee was able to move the ball to the Prairie 32 before a false start penalty set them back and Prairie took over on downs at their 37.
Prairie was able to moved the ball 30 yards before time ran out in the half.
The Pirates received the second half kickoff with McElroy returning the kick 11 yards to the Prairie 36.
The Pirates took to pounding the ball mostly up the middle as Hinds picked up 15 yards and Quintal followed with a 9 yard run. Hinds then had runs of 4 and 8 yards before Prairie tried a pass that fell incomplete. Quintal picked up 6 for a first down at the 22. Hinds picked up 4 yards then McElroy kept the ball and went 18 yards for the touchdown. Hinds wasn’t to be denied on the 2-point try as he was able to push his way to the score to give Prairie their first lead of the game at 20-16 with 9:28 left in the third quarter.
Prairie tried an onside kick but Genesee recovered at their 48.
Angus Jordan tried coming back at quarterback but was obviously hobbled and couldn’t buy time to pass by running away from defenders. Genesee wound up turning the ball over on downs at the Prairie 46.
On the next play Hinds burst through the middle for 29 yards. On the next play he went around left end for 12 yards and a touchdown. McElroy ran in the 2-pointer to make it 28-16.
Genesee recovered another short kickoff at their 44. Angus Jordan was again in at quarterback and got hit just as he released the ball but Prairie was called for roughing the passer moving the ball to the Prairie 39. Genesee faced a fourth and 5 at the 34 and the Pirates sent Uhlenkott on a blitz from the right side. Jordan knew he was going to get hit and just dropped to a knee to stop the play and turned the ball over to the Pirates on downs at the 39.
Wyatt Jordan was Genesee’s quarterback for the rest of the game.
After taking over the ball, the Pirates faced a fourth and 2 at their own 37 when McElroy kept the ball and took off around the right side for 53 yards and a touchdown. Quintal ran in the 2-pointer to make it 36-16 as Prairie outscored the Bulldogs 24-0 in the third quarter to take control of the game.
Genesee turned the ball over on downs at their own 38 after a fake punt play wound up as an incomplete pass.
Quirt Goeckner saw his first action of the season and made a couple of big pass receptions at Genesee. Also shown are Noah Behler, Carter Shears and Colrton McElroy.Prairie had the give the ball back as Hinds was stopped 1 yard short on fourth and 4 at the Genesee 29.
Genesee had to punt it back 6 plays later with Prairie taking over at the Genesee 48 after a 12 yard punt.
Hinds gained 38 yards to set up first and goal at the 10. Quintal then carried the ball into the end zone on a run up the middle. McElroy completed a shovel pass to Hinds for the 2-pointer to make it 44-16.
Genesee was able to answer with their first score since the first quarter when Wyatt Jordan connected with Bartosz on a 67 yard scoring play. The 2-point try was stopped leaving the Pirates with a 44-22 lead with 5:44 to play.
Another onside kick by Genesee was recovered by Hinds at the Prairie 47.
The Pirates put the subs in on offense and they still moved the ball down the field. Philip Schwartz had runs of 22 and 13 yards and the drive was capped off when freshman Levi McElroy passed to fellow freshman Levi Gehring for 17 yards and a touchdown. The 2-point try failed but Prairie now led 50-22 with 1:39 to play.
Genesee was able to cross midfield to the Prairie 46 on their final possession but the game ended when Uhlenkott sacked Wyatt Jordan for a 9 yard loss.
