Pirates routed by Kubs
The Prairie Pirates were thoroughly dominated by the Kamiah Kubs as the Kubs beat them 0-52 at Prairie’s Homecoming game Friday, Sept. 30 at Cottonwood. Shane Hanson recovers a Kamiah fumble. Also shown is Eli Hinds.
The Kubs defense completely shut down the Pirates offense as Prairie mustered just 71 yards of offense in the game.
The game actually started well for the Pirates as Kamiah the ball on their second play from scrimmage with Shane Hanson making the recovery at the Kamiah 31.
The Prairie offense couldn’t move the ball though and quarterback Colton McElroy was sacked on fourth and 8 giving Kamiah back the ball at their 35.
3 plays later Kamiah tried their first pass play of the game and it went for a touchdown as quarterback Dave Kludt connected with Kaden Degroot for 45 yards. Kamiah added the 2-pointer for a 0-8 lead.
Prairie went for it on fourth down from their own 36 on their next possession and McElroy’s pass was intercepted at the Prairie 47.
The Prairie defense forced the Kubs to turn the ball back on downs with Prairie taking over at their own 45. Eli Hinds picked up 7 on first down and McElroy passed to Jake Quintal for 4 yards and Prairie’s initial first down of the game.
4 plays later, McElroy’s fourth down pass to Levi Gehring went for 9 yards but came up inches short of a first down at the Kamiah 33.
Kamiah took the ball and needed 10 plays to score their second touchdown. Colton Ocain covered the final 29 yards on a run and Kludt ran in the 2-pointer for a 0-16 lead.
Prairie picked up a couple of first down on their next possession but wound up losing their quarterback. McElroy ran a keeper on third and 5 for 6 yards and 1 first down. He then gained 10 on a fourth and 9  for another first down but came up limping. He stayed in the game but a fumbled snap on third and 3 at the Kamiah 39 led to a turnover. At that point McElroy struggled to make his way off the field and wound up missing the rest of the game. It appeared to be a foot or ankle injury.
Kamiah took the ball at their own 43 and marched downfield for another touchdown. They add the 2-pointer for a 0-24 lead.
Tailback Hinds moved to quarterback on Prairie’s next possession with Gehring moving into the tailback spot. A false start penalty lead to the Pirates again turning the ball over on downs, this time at their own 34.
Kamiah need just 3 plays to add another touchdown and take a 0-32 lead with 1:15 left in the half.
Prairie fumbled the ball right back 2 plays later and the Kubs added another touchdown with 1 second to play. This time their 2-point try failed leaving the Kubs with a 0-38 lead at the half.
Prairie received the second half kickoff and on third and 11 from their own 34, Hinds had his pass intercepted and returned for a touchdown.  After the 2-point run was stopped that left the Kubs with a 0-44 lead and invoked the running clock mercy rule.
Prairie again turned the ball over on downs with Kamiah taking over at the Prairie 34. Two holding penalties led to the Kubs having to punt for the first time in the game from the 50. Prairie took over at their own 22 and with the help of a personal foul penalty against Kamiah, moved out to the 40 before fumbling the ball away again.
Kamiah took over at the Prairie 37 and despite another holding penalty, were able to move the ball downfield for another touchdown and a 0-52 lead with 8:08 left to play.
Prairie fumbled the ball away again on their next possession at the end of what would have been a first down run of 16 yards by Hinds.
At that point both teams put in their subs. Kamiah was forced to punt again and Prairie then ran out the clock.
Prairie had 34 yards rushing on 34 attempts. Hinds had 38 yards on 15 carries.
McElroy completed 3 of 7 passes with an interception for 22 yards. Hinds completed 3 of 8 with an interception for 12 yards. Levi McElroy was 1 for 1 for 6 yards.
Gehring caught 4 passes for 26 yards. Ben Elven caught 2 for 7 yards and Quintal caught 1 for 4 yards.
Kamiah had 187 yards rushing on 40 carries led by Ocain who had 74 yards on 12 carries. Kludt completed 8 of 9 passes for 154 yards.
Degroot had 2 catches for 77 yards and 2 touchdowns. Ocain had 3 catches for 47 yards.
The Prairie defense was led by Hanson who had 4.5 tackles plus a fumble recovery. Carter Shears had 4 tackles. Elven had 3.5 tackles. Noah Behler and Gehring each had 3 tackles. Hinds had 2.5 tackles. Dylan Uhlenkott had 2 tackles and Quintal had 0.5 tackles.
The loss is Prairie’s first league loss since the 2017 season opener against Genesee, a span of 32 straight White Pine League games, not counting forfeits. It is also the first time Prairie was mercy ruled in a league game since Kamiah did it in their 2013 state championship season.
Prairie is now 3-1 in league play and 3-2 overall. Their next game is this Friday, Oct. 7, at Lapwai, at 7 p.m.
