Pirates lose big at Lapwai
A shorthanded Prairie football team got crushed 12-80 at Lapwai Friday, Oct. 7. There weren’t many highlights from the game at Lapwai but this was one of them as Ben Elven catches a pass for a 47 yard gain that set up his touchdown a couple plays later.
Prairie was still without Trenton Lorentz, who is recovering from appendectomy surgery and may be back this week. They were also without starting quarterback Colton McElroy, who had recovered from the foot injury suffered last week but came down with an illness the day of the game.
With starting tailback Eli Hinds having to move to quarterback, Prairie wound up with a pair of runners who hadn’t played the position before. Shane Hanson moved from the line to fullback and Dylan Forsmann wound up as the starting tailback.
Things went bad for the Pirates right from the start as Hinds had a 33 yard return of the opening kickoff but fumbled at the end of the return with Lapwai recovering at the Prairie 48.
Lapwai had a false start that set them back 5 yards but then scored on the next play as Terrell Ellenwood-Jones completed a short pass to the right side to AhliusYearout who went 53 yards for the score. Lapwai added the 2-pointer on a pass to take a 0-8 lead.
Prairie got to send their offense onto the field after the next kickoff and Uhlenkott picked up a first down with a 13 yard run. However Prairie fumbled the ball on the next play and Lapwai recovered, taking over at the Prairie 38.
6 plays later, Lapwai scored again as Dillon White caught a long pass from Ellenwood-Jones for the touchdown. Lapwai again added the extra point for a 0-16 lead.
Prairie started their next possession from their 34. Hanson picked up 2 and Hinds then gained 9 for a first down. After an incomplete pass, Uhlenkott burst up the middle for 12 yards and another first down at the Lapwai 43. There the drive stalled and Hinds was sacked on fourth down as Lapwai took over at the Prairie 46.
Lapwai scored on the first play of the second quarter from the Prairie 15 with White catching another TD pass. Prairie stopped the 2-point run as Lapwai now led 0-22.
Prairie couldn’t move the ball at all and had to punt on their next possession. Lapwai took over at their own 42. They fumbled and lost 4 yards on first down but Ellenwood-Jones kept the ball and ran 62 yards for a touchdown on the next play. White caught the 2-point try to make it 0-30.
Lapwai then tried an onside kick but the ball went out-of-bounds, fortunately for the Pirates as it appeared Lapwai was going to recover.
Hanson gained 18 yards on the first play to move the Pirates to the Lapwai 36. Consecutive penalties set the Pirates back and Yearout wound up intercepting a pass intended for Hanson at the Lapwai 40 and took it 60 yards for a touchdown. The 2-point try failed as Lapwai now led 0-36.
This time Lapwai did recover an onside kick at the Prairie 49. After a false start penalty, Ellenwood-Jones ran for 54 yards and another Lapwai touchdown. That made it 0-42after the 2-point try failed.
Prairie took over on their own 24 on their next possession and Hanson picked up 11 yards up the middle for a first down. On fourth and 6, Hinds connected with Phil Schwartz for 26 yards and a first down at the Lapwai 35.
A couple of false start penalties led to a fourth and 14 and Hinds completion to Ben Elven came up way short as Lapwai took over at their own 42.
3 plays later Ellenwood-Jones scrambled for 46 yards and another touchdown on the final play of the half. Prairie stopped the 2-point try making it 0-48 at the half, meaning the entire second half would be played with a running clock.
Lapwai received the second half kickoff and needed just 1 play to score as Yearout carried the ball 57 yards for the score. He then ran in the 2-pointer to make it 0-56.
Hinds got sacked twice for 15 yards worth of losses on Prairie’s next possession and the Pirates’ incomplete fourth down pass from their own 15 gave Lapwai the ball at that point.
Jalisco Miles scored on a run on the next play and then added the 2-pointer to make it 0-64.
Lapwai kicked the ball deep with Hinds taking it at the Prairie 16 and returning the ball 75 yards to the Lapwai 9. Hinds then kept the ball on a run up the middle to give Prairie their first points of the game. The 2-point pass fell incomplete as Prairie now trailed 6-64.
Lapwai answered right back with another touchdown covering 62 yards in 6 plays. They added the 2-pointer for a 6-72 lead.
After Hinds returned the ensuing kickoff 30 yards to the Prairie 45, he completed a long pass over the middle to Elven for 42 yards to the Lapwai 13.
After a loss of 4 on a running play, Hinds again connected with Elven for 17 yards and a Prairie touchdown. With the 2-point try failing that made it 12-72.
Lapwai then rubbed it in with another long touchdown run on the final play of the game. At least it was by a backup runner but he scored from 60 yards out. Lapwai added the 2-pointer to make the final score 12-80.
Prairie had 57 yards rushing on 26 attempts led by Hanson who had 33 yards on 9 carries. Uhlenkott wound up with 13 yards on 8 carried and Hinds had 12 yards on 8 carries.
Hinds completed 5 of 11 passes with 1 interception for 88 yards. Elven caught 3 passes for 56 yards. Schwartz caught 1 for 26 yards and Hanson caught 1 for 6 yards.
Hinds led the defense with 5.5 tackles. Hanson had 4 tackles. Schwartz and Elven each had 2 tackles. Uhlenkott had 1.5 tackles and Carter Shears and Noah Behler each had 1 tackle.
Lapwai had 378 yards rushing on 25 attempts led by Ellenwood-Jones who had 197 yards on 11 carries.
Ellenwood-Jones completed 4 of 7 pass for 153 yards. White caught 3 for 100 yards and Yearout caught 1 for 53.
Prairie is now 3-3 on the season and 3-2 in league play. Their next game is against C.V. at Kooskia Friday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m.

Dylan Uhlenkott, right, gets a block from Philip Schwartz as he carries the ball at Lapwai.

Shane Hanson, normally a lineman, carries the ball at Lapwai.

Eli Hinds carries the ball against Lapwai. He gets a block from (we think) Noah Behler.

Philip Schwartz makes a catch and gained a first down on the play.
