Pirates win on Senior Night
The Prairie football team finished their season with a 48-20 win over Logos on a rainy Senior Night at Cottonwood Friday, Oct. 21.Trenton Lorentz runs the ball as Eli Hinds and Quirt Goeckner block for him. Behind him is Colton McElroy.
Prior to the game senior football players Shane Hanson, Colton McElroy, Quirt Goeckner and Ryan Wemhoff and senior cross country runner Morgan Poxleitner were honored.
Logos received the opening kickoff and set up in their spread offense where the defense had to play close attention to who the eligible receivers were as players would shift on and off the line. However, it seemed most every play was a run by the quarterback with an occasional pass play.
Logos got as far as their own 42  before turning the ball over on downs when Trenton Lorentz stopped the fourth down pass receiver for a loss of 2 yards. Prairie took over on the 40.
On Prairie’s first possession Lorentz picked up 12 yards on third and long to convert a first down. He picked up 8 on the next play and Jake Quintal then picked up 2 for the first down. McElroy kept the ball for 10 yards to set up first and goal at the 10. 3 plays later Lorentz went around right end for 3 yards and the game’s first touchdown. Lorentz ran in the 2-pointer to make it 8-0.
Logos answered back with an 8 play 70 yard drive capped off with an 8 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jack Driskill to Lucius Comis. Prairie stopped the 2-point try as they held on to an 8-6 lead.
Logos got the ball right back at the Prairie 23 when their onside kick got batted around before Comis recovered the ball.
Logos got down to the Prairie 5 yard line before going backward. A false start penalty set them back to the 10. Two bad snaps led to losses of 18 and 7 yards setting up third and goal from the 36. After an incomplete pass, Lorentz intercepted Driskill’s 4th down pass in the end zone and brought it back out to the 25.
Prairie moved the ball to the 41 before the drive stalled and they turned the ball over on downs.
Logos picked up a first down on a somewhat questionable pass interference call that moved the ball to the 20. 4 incomplete passes and an illegal block penalty later, Prairie took over at their own 27.
Prairie was forced to punt and punter Shane Hanson had to pick up a low snap and wound up punting off the side of his foot for just 8 yards.
Logos took over at the Prairie 35 and wound up scoring 6 plays later on a pass from Driskill to Comis for 16 yards. Driskill passed to Seamus Wilson for the 2-pointer that gave Logos an 8-14 lead with just 10.6 seconds left in the half.
The kickoff went out of bounds at the Prairie 40 and with the ensuing 5 yard penalty, Prairie took over at their own 45. McElroy’s first pass of the game went deep down the left side to Lorentz who took the ball all the way to the end zone on a 55 yard scoring play to tie the game as time ran out in the half. The 2-point try came up short as the teams went into the break tied at 14-14.
Prairie received the second half kickoff as Dylan Uhlenkott recovered the onside kick attempt at the Prairie 45. 3 plays later Prairie faced fourth and 5 from the 50. McElroy tossed a short pass in the left flat to Lorentz who took the ball all the way to the end zone for a touchdown. McElroy appeared to run in the 2-pointer but a holding penalty was called and Prairie’s pass attempt from the 13 fell incomplete as the Pirates took a 20-14 lead.
Eli Hinds then tried an onside kick and Quintal recovered the ball at the Logos 41.
On second and 8 Hanson burst through for 22 yards to the Logos 17. On third and 4 from the 11, McElroy ran a keeper around left end and went 11 yards for a touchdown. The 2-point pass fell incomplete as Prairie now led 26-14.
Prairie tried another onside kick down that McElroy appeared to recover at the Logos 25 but he was called out of bounds giving the Knights the ball at that point.
Logos moved the ball down to the Prairie 21 when Driskill fumbled at the end of a 6 yard run. Hinds picked up the ball at the Prairie 16 and was able to take it 84 yards for a Pirate touchdown. McElroy ran in the 2-pointer to give the Pirates a 34-14 lead.
Logos took over after the kickoff at their own 31. They wound up punting =from their own 24 and kicked the ball 36 yards to the Prairie 40.
Lorentz gained 21 yards over the right side on first down. After a loss of 1, McElroy passed to Ben Elven for a 17 yard gain. Hinds then burst through the middle for 23 yards and a touchdown. Lorentz ran in the 2-poitner to make it 42-14 with 2:56 left in the third quarter.
Hinds’ onside kick was recovered at the 50 by Logos. They got called for offensive pass interference on what would have been a completed pass and were set back to their own 35. They picked up 16 yards on a pass play but wound up facing fourth and 8 from the Prairie 48. Hinds tackled receiver Johnathon Morrill after a gain of just 4 yards giving Prairie the ball on downs.
Prairie moved the ball down to the 25 on a 16 yard run by Lorentz and a 15 yard pass from McElroy to Hanson. On the next play the Pirates were called for holding and that killed the drive and they wound up turning the ball over on downs at the Logos 34.
The Knights went almost exclusively to the pass as they passed the ball on 8 of 9 plays and got help from two Prairie penalties to eventually score a 7 yard touchdown from Driskill to Comis. The 2-point try failed leaving Prairie with a 42-20 lead with 3:58 to play.
Shane Hanson gained 22 yards on this running play.Logos’ recovered their onside kick try but it didn’t go 10 yards and Prairie look over on the Logos 47.
Prairie moved down to the 22 before and interception ended the drive.
Logos intercepted at the 2 and returned the ball to the 5. They moved the ball out to the 16 but had an incomplete pass on fourth down as Prairie took over on the 13.
On Prairie’s first play following the turnover on downs, McElroy ran to the left, cut back to the right and went 13 yards for a touchdown. Wemhoff was put into the game to try to run in the 2-pointer but got stopped as Prairie led 48-20 with 1:25 to play.
Logos’ last drive ended in a fumble with Goeckner recovering at the Logos 35. Prairie then ran out the clock.
Lorentz wound up with 104 yards rushing on 18 attempts with a touchdown and caught 3 passes for 105 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Prairie had 208 yards rushing with McElroy adding 49 yards on 15 attempts while Hinds had 33 yards on 5 attempts and Hanson had 22 yards on 2 attempts.
McElroy completed 5 of 9 passes with 1 interception for 137 yards. Hinds was 0 for 1 passing. Elven caught 1 pass for 17 yards and Hanson caught 1 pass for 15 yards.
Logos rushed 29 times for 100 yards with Driskill carrying 27 times for 88 yards.
Driskill completed 17 of 36 passes with 1 interception for 165 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Elven led the defense with 5 tackles. McElroy had 4.5 tackles. Lorentz had 4 tackles and an interception. Hinds had 4 tackles. Uhlenkott had 3.5 tackles. Hanson and Blake Bunce each had 2 tackles. Carter Shears had 1 tackle. Goeckner had a fumble recovery.
With the win, Prairie ends their season with a 4-4 overall record, 4-3 in league, tied for third place with Lapwai.
The loss the previous week at C.V. cost them a playoff spot as they would have tied for second in league with C.V. with a win. The top 3 teams in the White Pine League got automatic berths and Lapwai gets the final spot since they beat the Pirates. The Pirates were in the running for one of the 3 at-large berths but those went to Butte County, Murtaugh and Lighthouse Christian. Those were based solely on the MaxPreps rankings which apparently give a lot of weight to strength of schedule which is why Lighthouse gets in despite a 2-6 record. Apparently who you play is more important than whether you win against them. Butte County is 5-2 and Murtaugh is 5-3.
This is the first time Prairie has missed the state playoffs since 2012 and only the third time they have missed the playoffs since 2008.
