Boys start season 1-1
The Prairie boys basketball team struggled in their season opener, falling to Kendrick 19-52 Thursday, Dec. 1. They then bounced back to defeat Grangeville 47-33 in the Idaho County Shootout on Friday, Dec. 2. Both games were at Cottonwood.
Vs. Kendrick
The Pirates struggled to get any kind of offense going as they didn’t score more than 5 points in any quarter.
The Pirates trailed 5-24 after the first quarter, 10-34 at the half and 15-50 after 3 quarters. They actually outscored Kendrick 4-2 in the running clock fourth quarter.
Shane Hanson was the Pirates leading scorer with 6 points while Trenton Lorentz scored 4. Lee Forsmann and Noah Behler each scored 3, Bennie Elven scored 2 and Matt Wemhoff scored 1.
Prairie lost the JV game by a similar score, 19-55.

Vs. Grangeville
The Pirates shook off their offensive struggles from the night before and jumped out to a 12-0 lead against Grangeville in the Idaho County Shootout. Lee Forsmann works against a Grangeville defender along the baseline.
Trenton Lorentz scored Prairie’s first points on a putback and Matt Wemhoff followed with a lay-up after making a steal. Shane Hanson scored on a putback and Lee Forsmann scored a lay-up after making a steal. Hanson scored again inside and Lorentz capped the run with another putback.
Grangeville finally got on the scoreboard with a 3-pointer with just 42 seconds left in the first quarter. They followed with a 2-point basket to cut the lead to 12-5. Riley Shears then closed out the first quarter scoring with a drive for a lay-up.
Shears then scored the first 2 points of the second quarter at the free throw line. A Grangeville basket was answered by a Forsmann drive along the baseline for a lay-up. After a Grangeville free throw, Noah Behler closed out the half with a basket off an assist from Forsmann for a 20-8 halftime lead.
As the 6-3 second quarter score indicates, both teams struggled on offense as Prairie hit just 2 of 10 shots while Grangeville was 1 for 12.
Forsmann opened the third quarter scoring with a putback then Grangeville made a run to get back into the game. The Bulldogs scored 10 straight point to pull within 22-18 with 4:42 left in the quarter.
Forsmann broke the run with a drive to the hoop for a left-handed lay-up. Grangeville got back within 4 with a basket but Prairie then closed out the third quarter with an 8-0 run to go back on top by 12, 32-20. Bennie Elven rebounded his own missed shot for a putback then Forsmann scored on a putback. Elven scored on an inbounds feed from Wemhoff and Behler closed out the quarter by scoring after a steal.
Shears made it a 10-0 run when he scored to open the fourth quarter.
Grangeville scored 5 straight points but Prairie responded with a putback and then a 3-pointer by Forsmann and a basket by Lorentz to go up 41-25 with 4:00 left to play.
Each team scored 3 baskets in the final 4 minutes but Grangeville outscored Prairie 6-8 as two of their baskets were from 3-point range.
Forsmann wound up with 15 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Pirates in both categories. Shears was also in double figures with 10 points  and had 8 rebounds. Lorentz and Elven scored 6 each while Behler and Hanson scored 4 each and Wemhoff scored 2.
Prairie had a 46-34 edge on the boards. Lorentz was nearly in double figures in rebounds with 9 while Wemhoff added 7.
Wemhoff had 5 steals and 2 assists to lead the team in both categories. Forsmann added 3 steals.
The Pirates were 22 for 49 from the field, 45%, and 2 for 7 at the line, 29%. Grangeville was 13 for 56 from the field, 23%, and 4 for 13 at the line, 31%.
The Pirates are now 1-1 on the season.
Prairie lost the JV game played at Grangeville on Wednesday, Nov. 30. No score available.
