Lady Pirates split at New Plymouth
The Prairie Lady Pirates split a pair of
games against two of the top teams in southern Idaho at New Plymouth
this past weekend. On Friday, Dec. 12, they lost to defending state
champion Oakley 31-37. On Saturday, Dec. 13, they hung on to beat Grace
38-37.
Vs. Oakley The game against Oakley
started well and Sage Elven and Kylie Schumacher each scored for a 4-0
lead. Oakley then hit a 3 and added a 2 to take their first lead. Kylie
Schumacher put Prairie back on top with a lay-up.![]() Oakley then scored 2 free throws and a basket to take a 6-9 lead. Kylie Schumacher banked in a 3 to tie it and Elven added a baseline shot with 26 seconds left to give Prairie an 11-9 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was a disaster for Prairie as Oakley outscored them 2-10. Oakley tied it with 2 free throws but Sydney Shears scored to give Prairie what turned out to be their final lead of the game at 13-11 at the 6:08 mark. Oakley then scored the final 8 points of the half as they hit a pair of 3’s and 2 free throws for a 13-19 halftime lead. Elven picked up her third foul at the 5:06 mark and went to the bench Oakley then scored the first 4 points of the second half to lead by 10. Elven scored at the 6:20 mark then picked up her fourth foul at the 4:41 mark and went to the bench again until the fourth quarter. Oakley outscore Prairie 2-6 with Erica Schlader scoring Prairie’s only basket as they took a 17-29 lead. Kylie Schumacher and Beka Schumacher each scored to get back within 9. However Kylie Schumacher picked up her fourth foul. Oakley converted a 3-point play and Beka Schumacher responded with a basket. Oakley added a free throw to take a 22-33 lead into the fourth quarter. The Hornets added a basket to open the fourth then Prairie put together their best run of the game. Kylie Schumacher was fouled on a putback and converted the 3-point play at the 4:55 mark. Beka Schumacher scored on a turn-around in the lane. Hailey Hanson scored a putback at the 1:55 mark and added a lay-up that cut the deficit to 4 with 1:30 left. During that 9-0 run both Shears and Kylie Schumacher fouled out. Prairie wound up scoreless over the final 1:30 as Oakley added a basket to win by 6. Kylie Schumacher led the Pirates in scoring with 11 points. Elven and Beka Schumacher scored 6 each. Hanson scored 4 while Shears and Schlader scored 2 each. Turnovers and fouls hurt the Pirate effort as they had 30 turnovers and 19 fouls which led to 21 free throws by Oakley. Prairie went to the line just 7 times while Oakley had 18 turnovers. Prairie had a 35-29 rebounding edge led by Kylie Schumacher with 9 and Beka Schumacher with 8. Kylie Schumacher had 3 steals and 3 assists. Prairie was 14 for 37 from the field, 38%, and 2 for 7 at the line, 29%. Oakley was 11 for 40 from the field, 28%, and 12 for 21 at the line, 57%. In the JV game Prairie prevailed in a turnover fest, 36-11, that saw the two teams combine for 90 turnovers. Prairie had 35 and Oakley had 55. Neither team scored much in the opening quarter as Prairie to0k a 2-0 lead on a basket by Kennedy Riener at the 7:20 mark. Oakley tied it at the 1:28 mark. Blake Uhlenkott scored a free throw at the 45 second mark to give Prairie a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Prairie then opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run. Aubree Riener scored 2 baskets while Kennedy Riener, Lillian Rehder and Tori Shears each added a basket. Oakley finally scored at the 1:18 mark but a steal by Uhlenkott led to a basket by Aubree Riener that gave Prairie a 15-4 halftime lead. Prairie opened the second half with a 9-0 run. Reagan Brannan scored on a drive. Tori Shears then added a pair of baskets and Brannan hit a 3 on an inbounds play to make it 24-4. Oakley scored at the 1:26 mark then Prairie finished the quarter with a basket each by Kennedy Riener and Audrey Warren for a 28-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Warren and Aubree Riener each scored to start the fourth quarter and give Prairie a 32-6 lead with 6:42 left. Oakley then outscored Prairie 4-5 the rest of the way. Warren and Faith Cash each scored for Prairie. Aubree Riener led the scoring with 8 points. Kennedy Riener, Tori Shears and Warren each scored 6. Brannan scored 5 while Cash and Rehder scored 2 each and Uhlenkott scored 1. Prairie had just a 36-35 edge on the boards. Aubree Riener had 7 to lead the Pirates. All 13 players for Prairie got at least 1 steal with Brannan, Capri Hagen and Kennedy Riener each having 5 to lead the team. Uhlenkott and Aubree Riener each had 4 assists. Prairie was 17 for 51 from the field, 33%, and 1 for 12 at the line, 8%. Oakley was 5 for 33 from the field, 15%, and also 1 for 12 at the line, 8%. Vs. Grace The game against Grace was close nearly the whole game.Prairie took their biggest lead at the start as Kylie Schumacher scored the game’s first 4 points. Grace tied it and Elven put Prairie back on top with a basket. Grace then scored a baskets and 2 free throws to take a 6-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Grace
controlled much of the second quarter as they out scored Prairie 4-10
over the first 6 minutes to take a 10-18 lead. Kylie Schumacher had
both of Prairie’s baskets in that stretch.At the 1:15 mark Kylie rebounded her own missed and after a steal by Elven, added another putback. Hanson then closed out the half with a 3 that cut the lead to 1 at 17-18. Elven scored the first 2 baskets of the second half to put Prairie back on top. Grace tied it but Elven then added a turnaround shot for the lead. Somehow Prairie never trailed in the second half but their also never led by more than 4 and usually by no more than 1 or 2. A free throw cut the lead to 1 but Kylie Schumacher stole the ball and scored for a 3-point lead. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the third quarter. Elven scored 2 baskets for Prairie and Grace responded each time as Prairie led by just 1 after 3 quarters at 28-27. Schlader scored a basket to open the fourth quarter. Grace then scored a basket and a free throw to tie it. Beka Schumacher put Prairie back on top with a lay-up. Grace tied it again with a putback. Hanson then scored a free throw and 40 seconds later sank a 3 to put Prairie up 36-32 with 1:57 to play. Grace scored a couple of free throw but Prairie responded with steal by Schlader that led to a lay-up Shears with 50 seconds left for a 38-34 lead. Grace scored with 38 seconds left to pull within 2. With 9 seconds left Grace had a chance to tie it at the free throw line. They missed the second of their 2 shots and Elven rebounded and was fouled. She missed both free throws and Grace rebounded. However Grace turned the ball over with 2 seconds left and Prairie held on to win. Kylie Schumacher led all scorers with 14 points and added 11 rebounds. Elven scored 11 while Hanson scored 7. Shears, Schlader and Beka Schumacher each scored 2. Grace had a 37-41 rebounding edge. Schlader had 4 steals while Kylie Schumacher had 3. Prairie is now 4-3 on the season and 1-1 in league play. In the JV game Prairie suffered their first loss of the season 20-29. Prairie never led in the game as Graces cored first. Aubree Riener answered with a free throw. Grace scored to make it 1-4 and Kennedy Riener scored to make it 3-4 at the end of a low scoring first quarter. Grace scored the first 3 points of the second quarter. Zoey Behler made a free throw at the 4:29 mark that turned out to be Prairie’s only point of the quarter. Grace scored again for a 4-9 halftime lead. Grace scored to open the second half and Prairie answered with a 7-0 run to tie the game. Rehder scored a lay-up. Cash made a 3 and Kennedy Riener drove for a lay-up to tie it. Grace then came right back with a 0-8 run for an 11-19 lead. Brannan hit a 3 in the final second to make it 14-19 heading into the fourth quarter. Tori Shears opened the fourth quarter scoring with a basket to cut the lead to 3 but that was as close as Prairie would get. After 2 baskets by Grace, Brannan and Aubree Riener each scored to again cut the lead to 3 at 20-23 with 2:21 left. Those were Prairie’s final points though as Grace ended the game with a 0-6 run. Brannan led Prairie in scoring with 5 points. Kennedy Riener scored 3. Cash and Aubree Riener scored 3 each. Tori Shears and Rehder scored 2 each and Behler scored 1. Grace had a 38-43 advantage on the boards. Aubree Riener lead Prairie with 7 rebounds while Hagen had 6. Brannan and Behler each had 5 steals while Kennedy and Aubree Riener each had 2 assists. Prairie was 8 for 54 from the field, 15%, and 2 for 12 at the line, 17%. Grace was 13 for 43 from the field, 30%, and 3 for 10 at the line, also 30%.
