Students of the month for October at Prairie High School are Alex Richardson, left, and Abbigail Lustig. Alex spends the first two periods of the day at the elementary school.  Because I’m teaching math at the high school during the first two periods, Alex is the person who opens the elementary school library and runs it until about 10 a.m.  This is often the library’s busiest time, and Alex does a wonderful job of checking books in and out as well as helping students find books or take tests on them. Alex also came in before school started this year and decorated the library with bright, attractive bulletin boards.  She has an almost radar ability that allows her to see things that need doing and then she just does them without having to be asked.  We could not ask for a better person to start our day in the library at the elementary school! Abbigail is a delight to have in my drafting and commercial design classes. She is not afraid of hard work or challenges.  Although she has not painted much before, she is currently painting a sign for Angie’s Craft Shop. She is a natural learner. She listens to instruction, and the results are beautiful. Her positive attitude, talent, and maturity insure her success at what ever she decides to do.

The band and choir performed at the Veterans Day program held at Prairie Middle School on Monday.

Vance Chaffee, retired Air Force jet engine mechanic, came to visit his niece Ciara Chaffee in Mrs. Gilbert’s Red Group class. He shared with the children the places he has traveled and also got to help them with one of their table activities. They are learning dot-to-dot and number recognition. Thank you Mr. Chaffee for serving our country and by being a good example.
Chaffee served in the US Air Force from January 1982 through February 2003, a total of 21 years and 19 days.He took basic at Lackland Air Force Base near San Antonio, Texas. He went to technical school at Chanute AFB in Illinois. He was stationed at Little Rock AFB in Arkansas from 1982-85; Mt. Home AFB in Idaho from 1985-93; Fairchild AFB near Spokane from 1993-98, at Kunsan Air Base in Korea from 1998-99 and back to Mt. Home from 1999 until he retired in 2003. Vance is shown with the entire class in the upper photo and helping his niece Ciara in the lower photo.

Bobbie Bodine was a guest speaker in the Prairie High School Commercial Design class.  She demonstrated how to throw pots on the potter’s wheel.  She showed the students how to center the clay to make a pot.  Bodine helped student, Ryan Dalgliesh, with centering the clay and beginning the thinning process for making the walls of the pottery.  She had her own pottery studio for 15 years and the students were impressed with her expertise.
