At the Idaho State VFW convention in Worley, 245 delegates cast votes resulting in the election of Rick Johnson of Cottonwood as the Department Junior Vice Commander for 2013-2014.  Johnson’s race was the only contested department position.  Johnson, the District 2 commander, defeated the District 1 commander, Alan Roach of Clark Fork.  Johnson took the oath of office for his new position from National VFW Commander, John Hamilton of Florida.  Johnson relinquished command of District 2 to Les Pixley of Potlatch.   Rick has a long list of VFW service and continues to serve as Quartermaster/Adjutant for the Cottonwood VFW Post.  Johnson served as Department of Idaho VFW Safety Program Manager, Department webmaster, District 2 commander for five years, Cottonwood Post Commander, and Post Service Officer.  Rick and his wife Veronica reside in Cottonwood, where he owns and operates Prairie Computers.

On Tuesday, June 4, 2013, Rich Cesler, Commander Idaho Department of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, announced that Vince Poxleitner will receive the VFW Lifetime Achievement Award. Cesler said, “Vince is very deserving of this prestigious award and represents the best of all veterans through a legacy of lifetime service.”  Poxleitner is a member of Cottonwood’s VFW Post 4902.  An official award presentation is scheduled for District 2 meeting, October 5, 2013 in Cottonwood. Shown above are photos of Poxleitner during his time in the U.S. Navy in 1944 on the left and just after he joined VFW Post 4902 in 1951. See article at left for the nomination letter sent in by the Post.

Prairie Community Library held a book signing for Trebor Fairwell, also known as Robert Farris, formerly a resident of Cottonwood. His book, The Land of The Horrid Frontier is a fantasy, and was a big hit with the patrons. The Library will announce when the books arrive for anyone who placed an order. We wish Mr. Fairwell good luck with his venture. Photo provided by Donna Wassmuth. Click on the photo for a larger view.
