50
years ago in the fall of 1975, Prairie started their girls basketball
program. The above article and photo at right are from the Feb. 26,
1976 edition of the Chronicle. Of note, the two teams in the third
place game were both undefeated state champions in 1977, Prairie in A-3
and Capital in A-1. 1976 was the first time the IHSAA sanctioned the
girls state tournament with just A and B divisions that first year.
Prairie wound up in the big school division in 1975-76 because they had
something like 2 or 3 too many students in grades 9-12 to be in the B
